My PSU(Antec TruePower480 480w) seems to be making excess noise above atleast 20dBa then it's supposed to. The sound is a sort of grinding noise, kinda like a reving a race car in a cheap Nascar game. The noise isn't constant though, and that's what worries/annoys me.

My voltages seem within reason:

vCore - 1.62v
+3.3v - 3.28v
+5 - 4.95v
+12 - 11.94

This is really starting to piss me off. I'm 100% sure it's my powersupply, but is it starting to die? Am I putting too much load on it?

AMD Athlon 2500+ at 3200+ stock vcore
Abit NF7-S Rev. 2.0
2x256MB PC3200 Mushkin Blue
Built By ATi Radeon 9600 Pro
1x60GB Maxtor Harddrive 7200
1x40GB Maxtor Harddrive 7200
3xNo name 80mm Case Fans
3xAntec SmartCase Fan 80mm
1x12inch Sunbeam ColdCathode blue/green

That's everything that's connected to it. Only 2 of the fans, the 2 exhaust ones, are connected to the FAN Only headers on the PSU.

Any help is appreciated.

Probably. What can I do? I can't just replace the fan can I?

I assume I'll have to RMA to Antec? Or just buy a new PSU?

Ok, now the noise has magically disappeared. I believe this has been happening on and off for the longest time. A couple hours of it being loud followed by a few hours of it being back to normal. This is gay...

My bet is that one of your fans is dying. If its still under warentee RMA it and see what happens. If its not just tear it apart and put a new fan in.

Last time I opened up a PSU, there were no fan headers per say. The wires were just soldered on.

RMA'ing it takes a while though, and I don't have a replacement PSU.

could be the fan going or simply just buildup of dust.

i had a very old sparkle that was making weird noises. of course at the time it was 3 years old. i opened it up and cleaned the fan blades with a qtip and used a can of canned air to clean out the internals. suddenly no more vibrations and sounds coming from it :)

I stuck my can of compressed air in that sucker and showed it whos boss, but it still made those gay noises...Oh well, sometimes if I hit, it goes back to normal for a couple seconds then starts up again.

Then again, it goes back to normal in a couple hours...

I'm writing an email to Antec's techsupport and will attempt to RMA the bloody thing.

Silicone spray works wonders on fans. Rip the fan out, wipe the dust off, spray it in the middle while spinning it. Then install some filters.
