PSU Limitations?

As much as I try, I cant seem to understand how PSU's work exactly, and what's needed for what. That said, I'm trying to figure out the limitations of my PSU as far as video cards go.

I have a Corsair CMPSU TX650 ATX PSU, Q6600@3.2 stock voltage, cant remember ram voltage off the top of my head... if someone wants it I'll check. I'm curious as to what kind of video card upgrades are available to me with this psu, and more than that, I really want to learn how to tell myself, what to look for, ect. I cur4rently have an evga 8600, it works for the most part, but as time goes, I'm going to need to get a new vid card(s) soon, and with many options and sli/crossfire, it makes me wonder just how much I can actually do without needing a new PSU as well.
