Hey psu experts, I have a question regarding my current PSU and a newly purchased graphics card. My current PSU, an Antec smartpower 450watt, has worked fine for me since I built my computer three years ago. All my current specs are in my sig, with the addition of two 7200rpm hdd's, and my new graphics card being an ATI 4870 1GB. And I wanted to know if my current PSU can handle this thing.

Thanks

That seems to be an older design PSU and the 12V rails are a little light. It should work, but I would really recommend upgrading.

Is it making any sort of squealing or weird noise? If so, RMA it and use the EA500D that you receive from the RMA. If not, get a new PSU. The Smartpower PSUs are well known for above average failure rates as the result of a poor cooling decision and choice of capicitators. Your new video card will probably stress that PSU.

So I recommend picking up the EA650 for $65 from newegg.com. Great PSU for the money. Granted you don't need 650W but the EA650 is a really great deal for a 650W PSU.

I havn't received my new video card yet, so I don't know yet how it will react to it, but since 2005, it's been good to me. But now I'm considering getting a new PSU.
