PSU good enough?

I wonder how much money we could make if we made a sesame street PSU....all the parents building 1337 computers for their 3 year olds would buy it im sure ;)

One more thing....will 500W do it?.... :p ......I can upgrade if necessary.

Rig
Rosewill Case
E6400
Corsair 2x1GB DDR2 800 5-5-5-12
Asus P5B-E
7900GTO
Seagate 160GB SATA

and as of right now...the supply that Johnny recomended

Well, i got my full rig ordered and on the way. E6400, Asus P5B, 2x 1GB sticks of Corsair RAM (5-5-5-12), Rosewill Case, Arctic Silver 5, Liteon DVD Burner and such all from the egg. Any idea how long it will take to get processed and shipped? Ive heard of some people having their ordered get delivered the next day (its not going to be tomorrow but im hoping by thursday or friday). Also, i ordered the powersupply from Zip zoom fly that johnny suggested. It has a 5-7 day shipping. i dont know much about zzf but i hope they ship and get it here by friday. :) would make me extremely happy. Well thanks for the help all and ill post updates on how my build is going.

Take it back, it is a very poor PSU! :(

My Short List: http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showpost.php?p=1584056&postcount=192

Everything on the list is better than that.

An Antec HE 500W for about $79, or a OCZ GXS 600W for about $85, or a Corsair 520W for about $105.

With just 1x 7900 even the $49 XCilo GoodPower 500W "should" be enough.

Good Luck,
Dave ;)

I have to totally agree with the PCpoowercooling route. I was having difficulties finding one for my PC but they had a real nice one that fit into my system perfectly. On top of that, I can't say enough about the customer service. The first unit I got was bad and they were awesome in helping me. They sent me another unit next day air with the return label in the box of the new replacement. Not sure what the issue was with the first unit but the second one fired right up and is oh so quiet. Now my 7800GS is running even better.

LouP

Well, i just finished my first build about an hour ago. I just got done updating windows and I'm installing my games and getting my music and such. I ended up with a E6400, Asus P5B, Corsair DDR2 800, X-Infinity 500W PSU, Rosewill case, 7900GTO, Lite on dvd burner. Everything went smoothly as far as i know. :p I would like to thank you all again for the help. I'll be sticking around and hopefully learning more and giving some advice eventually.

Using a X-Finity 500W in an otherwise highend, quality system, just makes no sense to me.

Or a Rosewill case, to each their own I suppose.

The Xfinity 500 is a good psu. 32a on combined +12v, pretty cheap, good regulation.. it's a lot better than some other power supplies. It'll do a single card just fine. I wouldn't touch it for Quad SLI with 32 hard drives, but it's great for what he's doing.

No it is not a good PSU.

It is a "not too bad" PSU.

Here IMO are the "known good" PSU's:
These quality brands are highly recommended,
however not every power supply they offer will meet your needs,
be especially careful to make sure that the +12V rail(s) offer a
Minimum of +12V@26A for Single Video Card Systems & +12V@34A for Dual Video Card (SLI/Crossfire) Systems.

Class 1: These are the Best:

PC Power & Cooling (All Turbo Cool & ULTRA-QUIET SILENCER 610W & 750W),
Seasonic (S-12, S-12E+, M-12),
Corsair,
Silverstone (Zeus models ST56ZF, ST75ZF, and ST85ZF),
Etasis &
Zippy.

Class 2:

Antec,
Enermax,
Enhance,
Fortron (FSP),
Hiper (Type-M 670W & 730W & Type-R 730W)
I-Star,
Mushkin,
OCZ Technology,
PC Power & Cooling,
Seasonic,
Silverstone,
Sparkle,
Tagan,
Thermaltake ToughPower (Only the ToughPower Line!),
Vantec &
XCilo.

Class 3:

Hiper (Type-R 580W, 530W & 480W) &
Sunbeam NUUO

Seasonic has announced the release of their new M12 series, these will be available up to 750W.

Links to all of these fine manufactures websites & reviews are provided at the end.

I don't exactly agree with the placements of several brands in your list (Mushkin, FSP's AX series, Silverstone, hiper, sunbeam, some OCZ, seasonic, tagan), but I know what you're saying. It wouldn't be in the good, but rather closer to like:

OMFG good (zippy, etasis)
OMG good (seasonic)
good
<-------
Decent
not too bad (topower except ocz p.s 520 sli)
ugh (aspire, youngyear, atng)
is that even a psu? (leadman, deer)

Squarely between good and decent, leaning on the good side.

Also, I recommend a few more classes. it's kinda hard to put everything into only 3 classes

Class 1 (only the best!):

Power & Cooling (All Turbo Cool & SILENCER 610W & 750W),
Silverstone Zeus (ST56/75/85 ZF)
Etasis
Zippy

Class 2 (not quite as good as 1, but still very good):
Seasonic (S-12, S-12E+, M-12),
Corsair (HX 520, HX620)

Class 3 (A bit lower than class 2. Good alternatives.):
Enermax
Enhance
FSP Epsilon, Green
Hiper Type-M 670, 730, Type R 730
OCZ GXS, Powerstream 520 SLI, Evostream
PCP&C Silencer (except the 610 and 750)
Silverstone
Sparkle
Thermaltake ToughPower (Only the ToughPower Line!)

Class 4 (Not quite class 3, minor problems prevent it from being higher up):
Antec
Hiper (Type R 580, 530, 480)
I-Star
Mushkin
Sunbeam NUUO
Vantec
XCilo

Class 5 (Decent, but many better alternatives):
Tagan

and then 5,6,7, 10,245,098,329 are similar rated; not as good as above, but better than below. Often times i'd put something in a different catagory soley because of price.

That's only me though.

5-Classes, plus a bunch of sub-classes is what XS is doing.

I think Jonny is going to use 5-classes.

I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible,
but there probably is no way to keep it simple &
at the same time "spread them all out".

What I would like to do, once everyone is finished is link to XS & Jonny,
so as to give "second opinions"

It won't be perfect, but I believe it will be the "best that ever was".

Alright...so what exactly is wrong with the X-infinity? It powers my rig just fine with a little bit of headroom. Its not like it will work for a while and then shut down. From what i have did on it , it seems to game just fine so far. I went from 40FPS on CS:S to 140 with no problems. It doesn't overheat nor is it loud. There is nothing wrong with the PSU that i can find. Its a well build unit and powers everything i need to do. I would recommend it and just like Johny recommended it to me. A high end PSU is not needed for the rig that i have. This one works just fine for the fans and Hard drives that i have

Could you please link where Jonny recommended that PSU to you for this system?

Incorrect.

The V-Series are manufactured by Wintech.

The X-Connects were manufacutered by Youngyear.

Although a V-Series 500W isn't nearly as good as an X-Finity 500W, it's better than most in it's price range and has the proper circuit protection (overload and thermal) to prevent damage to the PC.

That said, you ARE powering a 7900. You might want to up the budget a tad. The X-Finity 500W is $24.99 after MIR and free freight at ZZF:

I thought he did here, but then again...i might not know what I'm talking about.

Jonny knows his Infinity's so I give way to his personal experence with this PSU.

Well, it hasn't crapped out yet so up until now its been a good PSU. Thanks once again Johnny for the advice. It doesn't match my case, but its an awesome PSU in my oppinion. I like it a lot so far.
