Hi all,

I'm running two GTX 470s and an i7 @ 3.8GHz. What power supply should I get if I want to power a third GTX 470? I'm looking to spend <= $190 for one...is this possible? If so, recommendations?

Regards,

i have to same question. but not for tri.

I think the corsair 1000w fits the bill

Been very happy with my Ultra X4. No problems with it for the 10 months I've had it powering 3x 480 and now 580 SLI.

The Ultra X4 line is pretty mediocre, especially for the money.

Yeah that's the review aspect of it and I was a little hesitant. Talked to a couple of other people that had it, got it on sale and like I said it's powered my sig rig which eats more power than most well for almost a year now. Just recommending what's worked perfectly for me under more rigorous conditions that what the OP would need.

So you ignored people that can actually properly test electronics in favour of hearsay, and spent more money on a mediocre PSU than it would have cost you to buy a better unit that would have powered your hardware just as well. Got it.

No, I talked to people who actually HAD the PSU and used it in similar situations. Testing is one thing, actual real world usage is even better and hardly hearsay. As I said I got it on sale and it's worked perfectly in a top end setup. I'm simply reporting my real world and long term experience with it, kind of the thing that most people are looking for when buying hardware at least as as much as formal short-term testing. If you think it's mediocre and not worth it that's fine I never said it was the best PSU on paper just that it's worked perfectly for me for 10 months.

Electrical characteristics cannot be judged subjectively. You cannot evaluate the quality of something like a PSU without testing it properly. Regardless of your opinion, "real-world" usage is actually not at all a meaningful representation of the quality of a PSU. There are plenty of people using shitty $20 "600W" PSUs to power their computers without any observable issues, and that's proof enough that subjective opinions about PSUs are largely useless.

I'm trying to help the OP by steering him toward good PSUs and away from mediocre ones. You made what I consider to be a bad suggestion, so I provided my opinion in the hope that he will make a better purchasing decision.

I'm also giving the OP advice for a good part:

I'm sure you can find some less favorable reviews. I think that you're mischaracterizing the Ultra X4 1200 a bit. It is a solid PSU, will fit in just about any case because of it's size and is fully modular. I didn't stick it into $3000 worth of motherboard, memory, CPU and GPUs without a good level of comfort.

That first review didn't fully load the PSU. The second one didn't test anything properly. The third one didn't test ripple. None of them did transient tests or hot box tests.

I'm not mischaracterizing that PSU at all. I said it's a mediocre unit and it's overpriced. I never said it was a bad PSU. However, there's no reason to buy one when there are better units available for better prices. Not to mention the fact that a 1200W PSU is way overkill for three GTX 470s in SLI to begin with.
