PSU for car?

Would I need to buy a PSU for a CarPC? Rumor has it that you don't, and they run at the same voltage? I'm no electrician, so I have no idea what I'm talking about. But If I were to need a PSU, I would then need to get an inverter too. Car --> Inverter --> PSU --> PC?
If its possible to go Car --> PC, how would I go about doing that?

You need the kind with wide input 6v-24v, b/c with cars the voltage varies A LOT.
Like when you're starting a car the voltage drops from the drain of the starter. Also, the alternator can put out too much voltage so when the battery is being charged sometimes you're getting 14-18v, etc.
