PSU Fan blowing back in

I recently got a Xclio Greatpower 600W for a C2D system. I love the psu, its 14cm is quiet (when cool, getting to that) and it is pretty damn stable. Its a CWT (they make antec supplies)

The problem is when it gets hot it makes a little more noise, its probably the loudest thing in my case (although its still pretty quiet I think it could be better).

Anyway, the fan is governed by the PSU internally and to see if it was moving enough air I put my hand inside the case right under the supply (which I had to mount upside down b/c my case doesn't have a top vent hole).

I noticed a lot of air being push back out, not all but some. So I pulled the supply and saw that there is a clear plastic guard inside to stop things (wires I guess) from hitting the fan, although it looks like this guard is taking up a little over 1/3 the fan on one side. I think the air is going in and being pushed right back out, limiting its effectiveness.

I'm not sure if anyone else has seen something like this or not but I'm thinking if I could trim the guard just a little bit I could open up the psu to a lot more airflow no ? Maybe leavit just make it perforated so it lets air through.

Or is this a bad idea ?

Sounds like you are tlaking about an air dam. It is used to direct airflow from the fan in a specific direction. I wouldn't remove it.

Yea, it looks like a dam not a redirector. Its normal to the fan and covers about half the area. I see aluminum fin underniethe it that look like they are meant to be cooled by the fan.

It looks like it needs to be perferated.

If I get a chance I'll open it up and take a better look.

The air dam is used to direct or redirect if you will the air to the areas that need to be cooled.
