I've been working on building a silent rig for a while now, and one of the last parts eluding me is a PSU. I've used a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750, which is quiet by most standards, but definitely not silent. I've been through three Corsair HX620s, none of which were satisfactory. The first made a hissing sound, and actually turned out to be the quietest of the three(I wish I had kept it). The RMA I received made a louder hissing sound, and the fan made a ticking noise that nearly made me throw it against the wall. The third I bought brand new, and it hisses the loudest. I'm still stuck with the last two, I guess I need to find someone who doesn't care as much about silence to buy them.
Something to note is that all of the power supplies also make a buzzing sound only during 3d games. Both the 8800GTX and 8800 Ultra I've owned also make a buzzing sound when in 3d mode, although much louder, something that's been discussed many times on these forums and others. Could these be signs that its something wrong with my house's power? I've tried different outlets, surge protectors, and a UPS to no avail. My Logitech MX518 mouse also makes a loud, high-pitched whine, and my Logitech Z-5500 sub woofer makes a low humming noise even when the system is turned off, unless I unplug the power to it.
But back to my first point, is there a good chance that I would have a different experience with the SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus SS-650HT or 550HT? That series seems to be one of the few that has high power while remaining very quiet. But the HX620s are SeaSonic made, so would I probably just end up with the same hissing?
I really wish there was a retailer near me that sold many types of power supplies, so that I could test them for noise without having to pay so many shipping costs. The closest thing to that is a Best Buy with only one, small aisle for computer parts that's always half empty.
So I guess what I'm asking for is any advice or help on any of these issues. If it matters, I'm also looking for a power supply without modular cables, as non-modular actually looks better the way I route cables(behind the motherboard tray). The rig it needs to power is the one in my signature, with the possibility of replacing the E6700 with a Q6600 or Q9450 in the near future. Thanks for reading.
