psu compatability

yeah hi am gettting a 6800ultra and just found out that my psu will now where near cut it at 185watts max. so i went on ebay and found a codogen 500w atx power supply. i wanted to know what to check for in the way of psu compatability. It heres all the specs
ATX compatible silent power supply - 500W
Suitable for Pentium 4 and AMD Athlon series.
One 20-pin connector with 4-pin extension (24-pin) - Compatible with all motherboards
One 4 pin power connector for Pentium 4 motherboards
Six CDROM/DVD CD/DVD/HDD power connector
One Floppy drive power connector
Power connector for the monitor

it says compatable with all mother boards and mine is also p4 but what about dimensions it doesnt say anything about that, so will it fit in my case or are all power supply units roughly the same size and i dont need to worry about this

also if anyone could tell me if this is a good psu (im getting it for $40) and what power supply is needed for a bfg geforce 6800 ultra oc256mb agp card

also when it says for instance a card needs a 400w psu does that mean it takes all 400w what about everything else such as the processor etc. should you get a psu with a max output of more than the card needs to allow for other compnents.

thanks

I one up you.

$53 Enhance ENP 460W

For $4 more you get a much better PSU (plenty of power also). I can play the 'get it cheap' game too Dave ;)

so thet $53 Enhance ENP will run the 6800 oc ultra a 2.4ghz processor a couple gig of ram and a 80gb hardrive. and also why is it better then the one $4 cheaper which has a 500 watt betteroutput is that the peak measurement

also what am i lokking for when i buy a psu.because i see plenty of new ones on ebay for sub $50 with 500w outputs. like i just found a supersilent Ezcool power supply w/switch brand new. That sounds pretty good to me but i dont know what to look for.

Back to these compatability issues i can measure the dimensions of my old psu i spose but what elses do i need to know. Is there heat problems to worry about thanks.
please reply soon as many of these ebay auctions are finishing up.

btw i do trust ebay and beleive that if something is said to brand new is brand new especially if its being sold by a company.

thanks

i trust e-bay as well... but not for computer parts. 99% of the time newegg (and others) beat e-bay sellers prices anyway. what you will find with buying off of e-bay is most people (and e-bay businesses) only guaruntee against DOA so if it dies in a few days or weeks (wich from the PSU's your mentioning it just might) your stuck with whatever warrantee the manufacturer has. whereas with an e-tailer like newegg etc. you can return to them and most of the time exchange for something else. That alone is worth dealing with a reputable e-tailer.

Believe me when i say you should never skimp on a power supply. Buy from a trusted brand.

and as far as $50 500w power supplies. unless its a reputable company its exaggerated quite a bit.

Long story short i bought a cheapo PSU from a place here in town about 6 years ago had it about a week then one day POP no more motherboard or CPU :( i learned my lesson the hard way. Listen to these guys here so you dont have too

whoa whoa these psu's that you guys are mentioning say PCI-E im only agp8x sorry for any confusion. still strugglin with these compatability issues thanks

sorry i know its a big ask but could someone maybe scout out some 450 500 watt (or whatecer i need for the system i descibed) Psu's on ebay for me under $50

You're not gonna find anything too great.

The difference between say.. a PCP&C 510, and a Powmax 580w, which appears to be a 70w difference in favor of the powmax, but the PCP&C is $200, while a powmax is only $30, is due mostly to:

QUALITY. PCP&C is one of the best manufacturers out there. Their power supplies can actually do what they say it can do, at actual pc temperatures. The Powmax, it's just crap. JonnyGuru, our resident PSU abuser, blew up 2 of them on a load tester, not even at half of the rated wattage. PCP&C says their supplies do 510w, continuous, at 50 degrees. They can do it. Powmax says 580w. Not a chance in hell. If you look at the guts in the powmax, or any other cheapo psu, you will find nonexistant components. Small parts, low quality, and compared to quality units, pathetic. Regulation on a cheapo psu is nonexistant, meaning that at many loads, it will already be out of ATX spec of 5% (11.4 - 12.6 v) The PCP&C, no bling. Flat black, sleeved cables, and no frills. Compared to the Powmax: mesh cover, a big led fan, sleeved cables, uv molexes, leds, changing colors. Remember that bling costs money. You can have a $100 bling bling unit which can't hold a candle to a $60, no frills, no bling power supply.

Have a look in the stickies of what brands to avoid. I recommend you go with the Enhance unit stated above. Quality, affordability, and at a reletivly low price.

yeh o kthe enhance looks good but
1.how do i know it will fit and be compatable with my system
2.it says pci-e but im agp
3. will it support the oc ultra 256mb, 2.4ghz processor, a gig or two of ram and a 80gb harddrive.
4. still why is it better than the one mentioned above it with a better watt output

1. It will fit. Almost ANY power supply (not counting propriatory crap) will fit ANY non-propriatory board. So, if you buy an asus motherboard and an antec power supply, you can be sure it will fit.
2. It says pci-e, but you have agp. it has a pci-e power connector, the 2x3 pin connector. If you don't need it, just don't plug it in.
3. Without a doubt.
4. Cleaner voltage regulation, higher quality, still quite inexpensive, and quality.

thanks that is the most helpful reply. just regarding number 1 i was thinking more size wise. will it fit on the guiding rail things that my other psu did. and number 3 make that a 256mb 7600gs which i think needs less anyway.

thanks

1. It should fit. What case do you have?

3. More than plenty. You have nothing to worry about in the "is this enough?" department for now :)

also one more thing, what about heat? will i need a new fan or something. I dont want my pc exploding
