PSU causing drop in X800 XT performance?

Picked up a ATi X800 XT AIW a couple weeks ago and have been very dissapointed in my FPS thus far. Seems that no matter what game I play, the FPS never stays consistent. Even when I play BF2 on Low settings I only seemto get a constant 35-40 FPS. I have an AMD Athlon XP 2700+ and a gig of PC3200 ram. All my drivers are current, and I scored 5256 in 3dMark05. Was wondering if it could possibly be a PSU problem? My power supply is 425 watts, but my +12v output is only 12a. Was wondering if this could be causing a performance drop?

What motherboard?

Also, what brand PSU. Some PSU's are rated PEAK and some continuous.

MB= Gigabyte K7 Triton, VIA KT600 chipset

PSU= Generic one that came with my case. Took a look at it and all it has is the specs on the side. Not sure if it will help, but they are :

Input Output

115 Vac +12V 12A Max
10A Max +5V 40A Max
60 Hz +3.3V 28A Max
230 Vac -5V 1.0A Max
5A Max -12V 1.0A Max
50 Hz +5v/SB 2.09A Max

Ok. So your CPU is 5V regulatd and the video card is the biggest draw on the 12V. So 12A on the 12V isn't really bad in your case, but the fact that it's such a generic power supply that it doesn't even have a brand is down right scary.

So... It's not going to HURT to upgrade that PSU. Get something with a single 12V rail, but future-proof yourself with something bigger than what you need.... like a PSU with at least 24A on the 12V rail. There's a few good ones out there between $40 and $60.

I actually removed the PSU, and the label was on top. Its a "Just PC" power supply. Company is "Just PC Inc.". Im actually dissapointed to hear that its probably not the reason. Been searching for the last week as to why my ATi X800 XT is under-performing. Guess Ill have to look for some other reason :( .

Hmm.. Well "Just PC" isn't exactly generic. They're not the worst, but they're far from the best.

Problem may or may not be the power supply either way.

Another thing is your card is AGP which is primarily a 3.3V load. Not 12V.

Sooo..... Get a DMM and check ALL of your voltages to make sure they're within spec (5%) when the PC's under heavy use. You can use an extra drive Molex for the 5V and 12V and for the 3.3V; I believe the PSU has a 6-pin AUX cable that you're not using. Orange is 3.3V.

jonny,

You are too damn analitical!

Posting in the PSU Section:

"I have a Brand-X POS PSU with +12V@12A, you think I benefit from a new & better PSU?

Just say YES!

Now by all means make sure to recommend the proper PSU, but a simple YES is BEST!

Dave :p ;)

The ATi X800 XT has a seperate power connector in the back though, so I dont think its just drawing off the AGP slot.

Ok. That's correct. But it's still not a lot of load on the 12V rail.

Either way, you could always get a better PSU. But if you get it and the problem doesn't go away... don't be completely surprised.

Dave, I thought you would have learned by know that I don't think throwing money at a problem isn't always the way to fix a problem. :) If it was, I'd tell everyone to just run out and buy a Dell to fix their problem! :)

Ultra's, Dell's ... what's next??? Child Sacrifice

ok mine does this too......ultra X-connect 500w here :( after like playing alot on bf2 it gets to like 25 frames or less. but reboot makes it all normal again. it could be the 1 gig of ram tho? but any input can help.

Using two sticks of 512? Try one stick at a time.

Also, how are you overclocking that CPU and is "Cool n' Quiet" disabled in the BIOS?

no i didnt mean soemthign is wrong with my ram its jsut i dont have enuf (2gigs). my cpu is just 120 mhz overclocled no biggie and cool and quiet is on in ios but not in windows.

turn it off in the bios, if you overclock that being on/enabled causes major problems, and not recomended to use when you overclock

then try it.......but if your lagging, it rarely means its your psu, but somtimes can be :p

Yeah. You don't need 2GB of RAM. Come on! :D

And do turn off Cool n' Quiet. It needs to be turned off in the BIOS if you're going to overclock. Otherwise, it's going to slow the CPU down in order to keep things cool.. and quiet! :D

Now keep in mind; if you turn off Cool n' Quiet and the PC starts locking up where it was slowing down before, then you may have to either bump the speed down a little. You say it's "only" 120MHz. 20% overclock is pretty extreme unless you have some crazy cooling on there.

And Dave... Yeah, I'm back. Got back last night in time to watch the Lightning spank the 'Canes. w00t!
