Well I orginally posted this into my Feeding Frenzy project log, but decided that others might like to know how I did this so here is the mod.

So what bugs most people about a PSU? One size wiring loom does not fit all, right? The loom is either too long or too short and usually looks half-assed to boot IMHO. So today I have decided to fix my HD power wiring so I get a nice looking extremely clean install. After all, I want it my way. :cool:

So the first thing to do is to gather up all the tools you will probably need. So what do we got here? heat shrink; heat shrink gun; red, yellow, and black wire; extra power assemblies, wire cutters; molex female pins; needle nose pliers; phillips screwdriver; molex pin remover tool; and a molex crimping tool. (sleeving not present)

So the first thing you have to do is either decide if you want to make the wires up from scratch or use some of those old molex extensions you got hanging around. I did a combination of both if the wires I salvaged weren't up to my specs. It helps to look over the metal pins with a Optivisor to make sure they aren't damaged before you procede. Here are the ones I harvested and made up for one 4 pin molex.

The first thing you will want to do is to get out the heatshrink tubing and put about 2" on each wire and shrink it down.

Then you attach the pins to the molex connector. If you don't know how to do this you can usually get the right info from the manufacturer of your PSU as to what color goes where. Since I was making up a cable for three hard drives I made three of these complete sub-assemblies. As you have probably noticed they are three different lengths. The longest one should be about 6" long, the second about 5", and the third one should be about 4" long for my finished cable. If you have wider separation of drives then you may need to fudge a bit on the sizes. ;)

The next thing to do is to mark the black wires so you can identify them later on in the mod. What I did was to use a silver color Dykem Mark & Code pen and marked each black wire that was next to the red wire. This is important so don't forget to do it! (note: it really isn't important as all black wires go to the same place on the PSU circuit board, but it just pays to be methodical in your madness).

Now you need to cut off a piece of sleeving about 12" long or so. Cut each end with a hot tool of your choice so the ends don't fray why you are working on the cable assembly. Take your cut off piece and slide it down the longest wire assembly you have. Please pick a sleeve size much bigger than you would normally use for your power cables as you are going to have a total of twelve (12) wires in this assembly eventually. If you use to small of a sleeve size it will not look good unless you like to see colored wire through the sleeving.

The next thing I did was to put a small piece of heatshrink near the plastic molex connector so the sleeving would not move.

Okay now the fun starts. What you need to do is to put the completed assembly in the top mounted drive. Then you need to guesstimate where the next cable assembly will get inserted into the sheathing. I did this by taking the second connector assembly and plugged it into the HD below the top one. Then you can easily see where you will want the assembly to go. Once you decide where it will go you take the phillips screwdriver and open a small hole in the side of the sheathing. It helps if you gather up a bit of sheathing so it is looser where you want to insert the screwdriver.

At this point in the mod you should get something that looks kind of like this.

And of course what you get out of all this is a power cable your way. :D

Tomorrow I will solder up all these wires so that the one set of cables coming off the PSU will attach to my HD cable assembly. :)

Thanks for the nice words. :) Yes I know about those connectors, but I think they look fugly and I don't like having to cut my wires in half to install them. I want a clean machine. :cool:

you dont have to cut ur wires to put the T's on....
the t's i have come with razor blades that split the wire where they clamp on and make a connection with the wire....

to each their own... ima Tconnector !!!!!! 4 life =]

That was what I was speaking in reference to. If you take the connector off the wire you will see what I mean.

But you shouldn't have to take them back apart. ;)
 
Nice how to for the masses.............. :D Read it already in your other post.............. :p Been doing my own cables from way back in the highend auto stereo days. Good job, very clean work, sort of like the way we used to do out helicopter wiring harnesses back in my Army days, that's where I got the idea from............. :cool:
 
That looks so cool. I NEVER would have thought to do it that way, props to you! :D
 
I do something similar, just with split-loom (the plastic stuff that's open all the way down one side), and cable-ties to hold the wires in place.
 
That was my solution, I like the sleeving idea a little better, it is very permanent though, no moving drives to different slots.
 
I don't mod my cables anymore outside of sleeving, I switch stuff around so often that I would have to mod a PSU a week.................... :eek: My test rig has it's 2 PSU in it this week and my main rig is on it's second this month. ............ :D

The split-loom option would work well for you then. I am working on converting a couple of my PSU's over to modular cables, that way I won't even have to reroute any of the wires to change out PSU's.

You wouldn't believe how many times I have put this computer all together just to check something or the other including wires and just about anything else associated with this build.

I would think long and hard about converting your PSU to a modular system. Get all the facts before adding a plug-in connection. You are going to lose a lot of amperage. :( I was going to add in an Ampco circular connector to go through the mid wall on my V2000 and after discussing it with a PCP&C engineer I nixed the idea. There is just to much loss on every connector you put in to a wire loom. We figured that my 510 SLI rig would be brought down to about 425 watts which was just a bit over my planned 375 watt usage.

Well in this instance it made a lot of sense as the Lian-Li V series cases have a specialized HD rack. I suppose you could add a bit onto the wire length and perhaps come out with a modifiable PSU cable mod. I am not planning on changing anything except adding more HD's, which if I do so will get another loom wired up for it.

Learned long ago to blaze my own way and leave a trail for others to follow. :D Thanks for the nice words and I hope the prayer I said for you works wonders. :)
 
As a fellow person that will do every detail to make a setup look clean as possible, impressive! I'm kinda jealous I didnt think of the individual sleeving on the wires, right by the molex's, before I put my loom/heatshrink on. That looks CLEAN!

Yes, but when you're working with a 550w PSU and 355w usage, there is room to work. The connections I'm going to be using will be small screw-down terminal distribution blocks. I will be leaving the ATX plug intact, and just making the molex connections modular for the exact reason you stated. Though I may rewire the ATX plug to make the wires an inch or two longer, that'll have to wait untill I start this buildup to see how far the cable needs to stretch where I want it.
 
I would, but I got these connectors from work and haven't found them for sale anywhere else.

unless you were talking to other guy, in that case... DOH!!!

I can't quite remember as I was just grabbed whatever was handy that fit well. I think it was 3/8" or 1/2".

Thats a pretty good job T-N... for someone that didn't use T connectors. ;)
