I tested my PSU and connected a case fan as well and I did the paperclip test with a fan connected as well and the fans went on momentary but turned off in about 3 seconds,is my PSU bad? I have a 750w Seasonic X series PSU.Thanks

Edit: Actually my CPU fan goes on for about 2-3 secs then turns off I didn't notice my PSU fan spin(if it helps it's suppose to only go on when needed but still shouldn't the CPU fan stay on?)

Do you have another PSU you can test with? It could be that the fan doesn't draw enough power for the PSU to remain on, or it could actually be faulty. Usually, these kinds of problems are caused by a faulty motherboard or a faulty PSU.

I think n00bie has the fan plugged in reverse. That is what happens when you plug in fans the wrong way.

Thanks for the reply, and no I don't have another PSU I can test.I think it may just come down to a faulty PSU because I had the same problems when it came to the Mobo and CPU fans as well. I even tried the Gelid Fan I recieved today so it seems like the PSU is the issue.Looks like I get to go through the fun RMA process with NewEgg. Thanks for your help.

It's a faulty psu, same thing happened to my psu. Would boot fans for few seconds then go out. Just rma it.

You need tools to help you test whether its faulty, otherwise its a guessing game. You need a multimeter or a PSU tester which can plug right into the PSU's motherboard power connector. If you don't own any of those tools, I'd recommend sending it back for a replacement.

Also, NEVER EVER take a PSU apart to tinker with it. The capacitors inside can still hold a lethal charge after many months. Its not worth saving a few dollars for.

No, they don't last nearly that long. It shouldn't take more than a few hours for the primary capacitors to fully discharge.

Never heard that about psu's, I have heard it about crt's though but not quite that long, more like a week is what I heard for the big caps in them. I usually just unplug the psu and then press the power button and that drains most of the juice left in it, never had a problem recapping psu's this way.

A single attempt to start the PSU would completely discharge it. Do it when plugged in, or bridge the green and black wires.
