PSP- Worth it?

Deadly sk1llz said:
No, because Sony has some reason to. Namely, the eboot UMD loader. You know, the thing that will make sony lose money because cheap bastards won't pay money for games?

But, I degress, the Homebrew community (namely a larger programmer by the name of 'Fanjita') will always hack into the new firmware. The same naysayers, such as yourself, said that 2.00 wouldn't be hacked. It was. Then they said 2.00+ would be hacked. It was. 2.6 is on the verge of being hacked. Within days a loader will be launched, and people on that firmware will be able to play emulators of games of past, unable to be found anymore.

Feel free to search my post history. That's the great thing about vBulletin...I can prove fools like you wrong simply by saying to look at my post history and show me where I ever said that 2.00 wouldn't be hacked.

I've never said such a thing and I never will. Unfortunately, blind fans like yourself continue to miss the obvious; for every "breakthrough" that is made by the homebrew community after 9~12 months, Sony's engineers take a week to completely ruin it and start people back at square one.

You'll be able to use new games, independently made like Rootage. (look it up, it's fun!) You'll be able to use a variety of things that you wouldn't normally be able to have.

Until Sony decides to embed 1.7a into the next must-have title. Then you're back at square one.

If you get into the whole homebrew community, you download player-made games, or prehaps ports of games (Quake 1 and 2 are being ported over to the PSP. Doom has be ported.

Don't get into homebrew as if I know nothing of it.

- Can you play GTA:LCS on the PS2? No. (Yes, they are making a port to the PS2 for it, but it's not a port FROM the PS2)

I can play the superior version of it on the PS2 (You know, the version that doesn't revolve the use of one nub).

Again; no, I can play the superior version on the PS2.

I believe Lumines is going to be ported over to the PS2.

No, and God...why would you want to?

Can you play these games on the go from your PS2? Can you play them while in class (wel... you shouldn't... but still)? Can you play them on the bus? Can you play them on a plane? No, you can't, your PS2 is at home. That's why the portable console exists. For portability.

I question the "portability" of a handheld that's battery life wavers between 3~5 hours during gameplay.

...and the rest? The ranting of a sad loyalist. The PSP is a better multimedia device than it is a gaming system. Unfortunately, a good PDA can be found for cheaper to do all of those things better.

ZX6... awesome post that doesn't suffer from any of the downfalls that both of our posts do sometimes :)

To me...
PSP = multimedia device... oh and it plays some games too (many of them ports)
NDS = gaming device. only plays games. there are lots of games (ports and originals)

There is a clear difference in focus on both systems, of which you can easily see by checking the EB release lists. Why do you think most PSP owners play old Nintendo games on the thing? It's not exactly the best MP3 player, nor does non-UMD video look all that great thanks to the resolution limitations from the memory stick. Nor would I enjoy playing the cat & mouse game with Sony to play my old Nintendo games. Nor would I want to brose the web on something without some kind of tactile interface (mouse, touch screen) - as I find it just as annoying on my cell phone.

If I wanted a handheld that was the jack of all trades, master of none... and of course, I was a graphics whore (the PSP's graphics look fucking amazing for a handheld! at the expense of battery life and load times...) I would have one already. But as I see it, my spending as much on a handheld as I would on a console is not appealing to me. And as it stands, it's not all that appealing to developers either. Reason? It costs just as much to develop a PSP title as it does a PS2 title... Why develop for an installed base of 8 million, when you can spend the same amount and develop for 100 million instead? (Hence the reason GTA: LCS is being ported, for instance - it was always in the plan). It costs literally a fraction of PSP costs to develop games for the DS, so you'll always see more games there. That said, if you want to run emulators, play videos and MP3s, or browse the web on your DS, you have to spend an extra $60-100 on hardware, as Nintendo made it to be only a gaming device to boot.

But this whole discussion, which we've had a million times already here, all boils down to this: what do you want your handheld to do?

I have to agree here, if your a child and find animal crossing fun (trading fruit) or want to own a mario kart clone with poor graphics, then yes...get a DS insted.
People, I'm not trying to be rude or call you children but the DS is for children...I mean I wouldn't buy one for a child older then 13.

"If you're a child you'll find ds fun..." "I'm not trying to call you children..."

How is that not flamebait?

And why do people assume that unless it's violent or bloody it must be for kids? Oh right because they're so insecure about their own maturity. It's the same thing as homophobia.

Anyways this topic has been done to death:

PSP - Great homebrew, emulation, multipurpose and some pretty good games, but expensive.

DS - Great games and great price point, but doesn't do much else unless you're willing to drop another $150 or so on an M3 and PassMe.

That was complete flamebait, but I chose to ignore it, since it was an obvious sign of immaturity. We should all ignore comments like that or this thread will follow the suit of many others. I agree, though, Slarti... but avoiding the flamefest is best :D

Yeah I know, it just helps the work day go faster if I have something to be annoyed about :D

I'd say it's not worth it. A PSP is half the cost of a laptop, get a laptop. The laptop will play all the DVDs you already have so no buying those stupid UMDs, and there's no need to buy new expensive games when you can play your old PC games, or play older games you never got around to playing. They will be a lot cheaper now, and still better looking than any PSP game. A laptop is cheaper in the long run and much more useful.

No sir, I was simply making a generalized remark about how most people feel that the certain firmware (2.00, 2.01, 2.50, etc) will not be hacked. I was not claiming that YOU specifically said they will never be hacked. I'm sorry I made it seem like I was saying this, because, as you said, it would be wrong.

This is slightly true (ignoring the 'blind fan' flame), however, there is a extreme mistake in your argument. The timeframe. The PSP was released in MARCH of 2005. It hasn't even been on the US market for a year yet, and you claim it takes 9 to 12 months to catch up. It's closer to 9 to 12 weeks to catch up. The greatest benchmark of the newest homebrew 'hacking' of 2.6 means that for the first time a PSP user can use homebrew on ANY firmware, and that they are finally caught up to the highest firmware. This hasn't happened before. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it!

This was not directed at you, but the op of the post. I'm guessing he doesn't have a finger to the pulse of homebrew for the PSP, so I was giving him some ideas to look up.

PARAPHRASE: I can play a superior version of X game on the PS2,

This is a paraphrase, not his exact words. If you feel it is misconstrued, then by all means, call me on it. My point of my post was to show that while the PSP does not have as good of graphics, or even control scheme of it's console counter-part, that's not is purpose to replace the PS2 conter-part, but to offer another playstyle, of 'on the go' entertainment and continuation of the game you were playing comfortably at home.

The battery time of the PSP is pretty nice. Given, it can't last a trans-Atlantic flight like the Sony rep said he wanted it to do (hell, that would be sweet.), but are you kidding me? you're going to knit-pick 3-5 hours? Are you playing your DS for 3 to 5 hours plus that you can't get to an outlet at home to recharge it? I think my PSP usually lasts 4 hours plus, even on a game that loads a lot (Burnout: Revenge, for example), and I never get caught when I want to play it and I can't because I'm out of batteries.

Ranting of a sad loyalist, while flamebait, I will respond to it.

There's a large difference between a 'sad loyalist' and someone who really enjoys they cool new gadjet they have. I'm the latter, if I may label myself so. I enjoy my PSP, I enjoy it's games, I enjoy it's style, and I enjoy the player-made games, programs, and little tools that have been developed. I think it's a really awesome little device.

It's expensive to get into, I won't lie, but I enjoy it so much. How am I any different from a really avid Nintendo fan? A avid Sega fan? Why am I the 'sad loyalist' or as some comment on the PS3 vs 360 war threads as being a 'Sony follower'. I'm not a Sony follower, I don't have blind devotion for Sony. I enjoy the PS2, I never owned a PS1. I have a PSP. I don't have any other Sony products.

No TV's, no Stereos, no other music players. I'm not a 'blind devotee' but rather a picker and chooser. I choose the PSP, because it looked the most interesting to me. So far, I have not been unsatisfied with it.

Yeah, well they've pretty much cracked 2.6 now. The e-boot loader works, and it's just being polished. I would say it's worth it.
