Psp or Ds lite?

Hey all,

I was thinking of getting a console. I thought on the psp or ds lite. I dont know what to chose. Ds is cheaper, i like the desgin more (the black verson) and it is smaller. The psp has better grapics and litle expensive. It have memmory slots too.

I think that psp has games for those who are older, (i am almost 18). And ds lite has more games like super mario etc and those is for the youger ppl.

I want your advice and those who own one of thise is mostly welcome :)

I dont know why but i like the psp more. What should i buy? or wait untill ps3 come and see if i buy x360 or ps3?..

I own both of them.. bought both of them at launch, and wish I never bought them..

The DS is fun.. Mario Cart and Brain Age look fun to play, but havn't tried them personally. (I only have mario 64 for the DS).. For the PSP, I have a bunch of games - GTA, Untold Legends 1 & 2, Lumines, and 2 or 3 others I can't remember at the moment - but really, I never play it. I've been using it recently to watch movies, and thats about it..

Umm, I would say go to a store and try out both of the demos and see which one you think you'll like.. PSP can do more things.. but DS has alot better games imo
 
thats my thread :) i chose the DS Lite and oh my was it a great choice.. get big brain academy, new super mario bros.. thats what i started out on im going to get metriod prome soon

Definetly worth it.. everyone i klnow that has a psp, they all got bored after about a week and never play it any more.. comon now mario is back :)
 
I would have to vote for the DS, although I am not personaly intersted in owning a portable system.
 
DS Lite...

Got one for my girlfriend and it is great. She got nintendogs, new super mario brothers, and tetris, and all are awesome

Tetris over Wi-Fi is gaming heaven.

Dont forget th Opera browser coming out later in the year. It will be a full browser, and browsing with dual screens and a stylus will be very good for such a cheap gaming system.
 
I don't have a PSP, but the multi-player gaming on the DS is incredibly fun. I just bought a DS Lite, and my younger brother has an old DS, and now all my brothers and sister and I play Tetris against each other all the time. So much fun.

Also, the touchscreen on the DS is really intuitive. Its a great way to play games. Touch tetris is fun to mess around with, and the mini-games in New Super Mario Brothers also make good use of the touchscreen. Those are the only two games I have at the moment, but I plan on picking up Brain Age, Advance Wars DS, and Meteos in the coming months...
 
DS lite FTW!

I have both systems, I play my DS all the time, and I never touch my PSP, its been servering as a $250 paper weight.
 
I've tried both. I borrowed a friends PSP for a business trip. Played for about ten hours total and it gave me terrible hand cramps. I think the psp is poorly designed, however the screen is spectacular. I ended up buying a DS. There is a hugh variety of games, especialy if you include the gameboy advanced titles. what i like the most about the ds is the touch screen feature. It realy makes playing games fun. I now find the DS add-on cards for a media player give me all of the same features as a psp, with the exception of screen resolution. Until the psp comes with a hard drive and a GPS navigation add-on, i am sticking with the DS.
 
PSP...

I have a PSP, I use it for everything that it does. I listen to music, watch downloaded shows, listen to podcasts, store digital camera pictures, and play games, browse internet.

If you allready have an MP3 player than the MP3 playing capabiliity of the PSP becomes redundant. I don't have an MP3 player so for me it is quite usefull.

I download video's, shows, etc, and put them on my PSP so I can watch them on my lunch break, between classes, etc.

I just started using the rss feed capabilities of the PSP, I use it for a few blogs that I read and a few local radio stations.

The internet browser is somewhat limited and the controllers are strange, but once you get the hang of it, it is very easy to open up the browser and hop on a network almost anywhere.

I've played DS before, no games for the DS appeal to me. I do not like Mario games, I never have. The PSP has a bunch of games that I like. SOCOM, GTA, Race Driver 2006, WRC, Katamari Demacy, Tiger Woods 2005/6, Lumines, PQ, Mercury, Need for Speed Most Wanted; all great games IMO.

The graphics on the PSP are far better than the DS. I don't car what anybody says on this, the graphics of the DS just do not compare to the PSP. I find that having a single, larger, higher resolution display. is more convenient than 2 smaller displays even if one of them is touch sensitive.

I have upgraded my PSP from the 1800mAh battery to the 2200mAh. From what I've seen, it lasts longer than my friends DSLite in certain games.

The PSP will be overall more expensive. Not only is the base unit more expensive, but the games and accessories/upgrades are more expensive. A memory card of decent size is a must, 1gb absolute minimum, 2gb is much more practical now that the prices have fallen, hopefully 4gb and 8gb will come down in price sometime soon.
 
I just bought a DS Lite after not owning a portable in 12+ yrs and it is great! I picked up the New Super Mario brothers and my girlfriend plays it more than I do. I played with a PSP briefly and liked the idea of modding it but none of the games really appealed to me and my MP3 player is already hacked to play movies and stuff so I dont need that feature. I didnt even want a DS until I started reading reviews about the Lite about a week or two ago and looked at the games coming out for it.
 
I would say DS lite, but I will never spend >$100 on a handheld. The game selection is better and I like the design.
 
To simplify most people seem to agree the DS Lite is the better system for pure gaming.
PSP has better media functioning and more powerful hardware.
Running homebrew is a hell of a lot easier on a DS lite though.
Also there are already a few dozen good quality games out for it right now.

PSP imo, is severely lacking in quality games. But I'm biased because I didn't want to
play PC style games on my handheld so most of PSP's more popular titles like GTA LCS don't appeal to me at all. But for sure the PSP has more capable 3D ability. Also I really intended for this system to be portable, take it with me to school and such, and the PSP is just too bulky to fit that role.

They both have their strengths and weaknesses.
 
ds lite by far. I had the psp and well I returned it after about 5 months because it sucked and had no games.

Saved mu money and bought the DS lite and Ive been very happy.
 
Another vote for the DS Lite. I bought a Nintendo DS on launch and I just recently bought a DS Lite a few days ago. I highly recommend the New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart DS, and Brain Age.

I also own a PSP, which I bought about a week after it's launch. I played it for about a week, and haven't touched it since. Not a good sign.
 
ds lite all the way, picked one up last week with true swing golf, mario kart, metroid hunters and 007 goldeneye.... with my new MIMO router I can get a wifi connection all the way downstairs with my router way up in the bedroom... oh and mario kart on wifi = crack cocaine.
 
PSP if you can get a 1.5 and into Homebrew but if not DSL all they way. Many more fun games to choose from.
 
This is going to sound a little one sidded but hear me out. I've had both a first gen psp(Jap version) and a first gen ds. I have yet to play with a ds lite but think I'm going to pick on up(I gave my ds to my bro a while ago).

Anyway it depends on what you want it to do.
If you want to use it more for media functions get a psp. Then again if you want it for that get an ipod video or something.

For games get a ds. It plays all the gb advance games which means you can pick up some great classics for real cheap(it doesn't play old school gb but o well). The system also has a lot of great games for it(ds games).

The PSP had a very slow start on good games and while it has some good games they were comming out very slow. As far as UMD movies a bunch of studios have dropped support but then again why would you want to get a movie at full price that you can only play on a psp. Home brew support is pretty good but with firmware updates you never know what will block it. Also with the games being on disks you have load times. Something that really doesn't happen with gameboy games.

I'd go for a DS myself but go to eb games or something and try them both out.

Good luck trying to find a new PSP that still have 1.5. :p

To the OP: If you don't live in Europe, I don't see how you would use the black version, because the Euro DS uses a 3-pin 230V/50Hz power adapter.

It's not a problem if you live across the pond, of couse.
 
DS Lite all the way. Since people have already mentioned a lot of other features, here are a couple things I noticed that may not seem that significant, but are actually really, really nice to have.

1. The games start up really fast. You cant be playing less that 10 seconds after turning on the power.
2. Closing the lid puts it in standby mode. You can open it again and start back off exactly where you where when you closed it, and it doesn't use much battery life. For a portable system, this is infinitely handy.

I have no idea how these things compare to PSP functionality.

I left my DS in Standby for 3 days with Metroid Prime Hunters... opened it up and it was still ready to go with plenty of juice o_o

DS Lite is on my list to pick up after I get a 360. I want to play all the old Nintendo stuff - Mario, Metroid, Zelda, and StarFox. Waiting a few months will give time for the later to come out and help prorate my massive spending. :p
 
I have both, and I would say the games that are on the PSP are better and the console is better in almost every way.

But I play my DS alot more because there are more fun games to play. If you get one get the DS.

And homebrew will work with even new DS's, I can't say that for the new PSP's (I have the 1.5 model)

Homebrew works up to firmware v2.6 given you have GTA. Homebrew will NOT work firmware v2.7 and v2.71. But it's only a matter of time before even those firmwares have homebrew running them.

My PSP came with v2.01, I never really cared to run any homebrew so I didn't hesitate to upgrade it to the latest firmware.
 
Take it from a guy who hasn't played a handheld in 14yrs, the ds lite is a lot of fun!

I picked up tetris ds (damn i suck so far, haven't played seriously since '89), brain age (nice, unique, and fun way to test your mind...it gets kind of repetitive, but a lot of stores offer it for free) and castlevania dawn of sorrow. Man o man it is fricking sweet, i don't want to play that much because of my eyes, but 2hrs in and it is exactly like playing symphany of the night one of the best games ever made.

Go get a ds lite...

sorry to sidetrack...any opinions on mario, or other games to pickup in the future? I really want that zelda game...hehe
 
Thx for all the help ppl. Well it seems that the dsl has more fun games than psp but psp is better allround mashine :). I will go to a shop soon and try them both. To be honest i wanted the psp, but it is expensive but who knows, i will change my mind?
 
For me it has to be the PSP for one reason only... It has Football manager on it ;) To the people in the states, this is a 'soccer' management game and I'm not sure if it had been released over there or not :confused:

I play it ALL the time when I'm travelling, which is usually about 2 hours a day to and from work and makes the time fly by :D

Wipeout Pure is also one hell of a game :cool:
 
I just bought a DS Lite after a long time w/o a console of any type. I purchased New Mario Bros., Brain Age, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Mario kart, Tetris DS with it. I have no regrets. It has been extremely slow at work and I have played this thing for several hours a day for the past week and a half. You just have to pick your games carefully, lots of the DS games are for younger crowds, but there are many that are quite fun. One major advantage is the multi-player w/ only one person having the game cartridge. Nearly all DS games can do this. The battery life is so long it's not an issue even when playing for extended periods or multiple days. The standby feature is a must have, it can save you from repeating a level or starting over. Sound is surprisingly good, especially w/ headphones. If you check this Thread you can find out how to run audio/video on the DS, it's fairly easy. As far as graphics go the PSP has better graphics in general, but the games I have all look good. Your not going to mind slightly lower graphics if the games are better. Which I think the DS has the game advantage, compared to what my office-mate has for his PSP. The touch screen is great, it adds something to the game which the PSP can't.

I would suggest purchasing a used system. Snoop around the boards long enough and you will find a nice packaged deal, in some cases cheaper than the Core package. I ended up buying mine from FS forums for $160 shipped.
 
I have both.. and like both.. however.. i would say.. go with the DS first.. if you have cash later then get the PSP... but first with the DS

I've done this with EVERY PSP game. Funny how now that DS can do this it become a strong point for the system but when the PSP was the only system capable nobody cared.

Wow, nobody said the PSP can't do that. Take it easy, man.

Another strong point of the DS Lite is the fact that the screens are well protected when the unit is closed.

As opposed to the PSP I'm sure, but I wouldn't call that feature far from being protective.

Even though it's an extra, I have to give Logitech props for the PGP (I cannot count how many times it has saved my PSP).

Another nice feature of the PSP is it's infrastructure mode (applies to a select few of games of course).
