PSP Longevity?

Remember that Sony has a long history of product failures, and they never seem to learn from them.

Betamax - No doubt superior to VHS, but they never opened the format to other manfacturors and it died out.

Minidisc - A decent format to carry around music with, but again they never opened the format and it's pretty much dead now.

Memory stick - The next failure. They decided to make their own flash format instead of using a standard one like every other manfacturor. I won't buy anything that supports memory stick sicne I'm sure it will fail in the future.

I'm sure there are others in there as well I haven't listed. It will be interesting to see what happens with the PSP. It does have nice graphics, but graphics alone don't make a game, or a system.

While the PS1 was a runaway success, remember that it was original developed as the cd-system addon for the SNES. I'm not sure how much of a role Nintendo played in development of it, but I'm sure they had some role.

Well, they are learning from their mistakes...from what I understand [ from Sony themselves ] it appears the PS3 is going to have Memory stick AND compact flash support.

So atleast their learning.

Yes I know this is about the PSP, just stating the fact that sony is learning to make up for their mistakes.

The memory stick is not a failure. How was Sony supposed to "use a standard like everyone else", when there are dozens of "standards"?

Nintendo had zero input in the PSX development.

my goodness, such !!!!!!izm....

do you guys remember a system called the "Turbo Express"? (or PC Engine GT)
PSP will go out the same way. Price is what killed it, and the PSP will meet the same fate.

The Turbo Express was $299 when it came out, which made it the most expensive "console" at the time. (not counting the CD system addon for the TG16... $399!!)

its a fact that when there is cheaper consoles that are much more stronger than the portable, the portable dies. as you can see GBAs are what, 79 bux? the cheapest "console" out.

last weeks figures will show you.
The DS was the most sold system last week, with 66,000 units sold.
The PSP sold 2,000 units. The PSone outsold the PSP by 3X that week.

When they start selling less than 500-750 units a week, they will probably kill this system.
Its is true they made a niche market, but for the price, its not enough to sustain the system for more than 2 years, at most.

Uhh... few differences.

Back when the TG16 and the express came out it was 1990.

Now then, the Express was actually $349.99 when it launched in 1990... the PSP is $249.99 in 2005.

You should know from even the most basic economics classes that $350 dollars in 1990 money is far different then $350 in today's money... even less so a problem for the PSP as it's $249.99.

Not to mention the fact that discretionary income has risen at a very alarming rate in the past 10 years, and that since the golden internet boom days of the late 90's, spending on technologically oriented entertainment devices has risen past anyone wildest expectations.

Spending $350 for a gaming system in 1990 required thought for quite a few, to spend $250 for a gaming system today requires many to think not... and instead just buy.

We're living in a day when for many people in this country a half million dollar home is a bargain and a car costing just over $30,000 is a good deal.

People blow money these days like CEO's blew crack in the 80's.

You also failed to mention the Turbo Express was very bulky, pretty heavy, had a tiny screen, poor battery life and was very poorly advertised here in the US.

Finally, you also fail to remember that back then most systems only ran exclusive titles. Each system, (Nintendo, Sega, NEC) all had their own games... of course there were a few cross platform titles, but not many. With that said, you know fully well, that time period was dominated by the NES and the recently released Genesis, both of which we're under $150 and both of which had quite an impressive line up of games. NEC had Bonks Adventure... that was about the best it was known for.

Frankly, the NEC systems we're too advanced, too powerfull and too expensive for the gamers of the day. Same as seen with the Neo Geo later on.

The PSP doesn't suffer from any of those problems... excluding the price point, which I contend is of little matter to many people these days.

Take a look at the list of games coming out... they're not tentative titles, or drawing room sketches, they're actual games, near finish, almost ready to ship.

Those games alone will assure the PSP will have at least 6 months in it... after Sony releases the upgrade with a browser built in and lowers the price for the Christmas season I can't imagine anything but at the very least minimal success for Sony.

LeviathanZERO, hows about a link for your claimed numbers? I think they are way off. 2,000 for the PSP? Not likely.

nintendojo
oh i dont know, this is the internet.

google DS sales for May 7-14. theres plenty to support my numbers, i dont have a link cause if seen it at too many different sites.

and GraFiZ(sp?) Its plain and simple and you said it yourself. A system that costs too much will always fail. Dont get me wrong, theres nothing wrong with the PSP, its an amazing peace of hardware. It just will not sustain itself long enough to be profitable at the current price. People arent buying it, cause they can get a REAL PS2 for half the price. Who gives a shit about economics? Its about demand, and its not there. 66,000 to 2,000 is a HUGE difference.

you know what, ill just look up the damn link.

While I see the price point as a negative... there's not much you can do about it.

The PSP is aimed at a completely new market, higher end portable gaming system. The DS is powerful, no doubt, but the PSP runs circles around it (debatable, I know), and it has more to offer. The DS can use add ons to do the same thing as the PSP (Video and music), but the PSP comes with these things STANDARD.

I'm not saying the PSP is better than the DS, I'm saying that it will stay simply because there is going to be a market for this thing, especially in Japan. It's a extremely high-end piece of hardware, especially with the graphics it can put out. I don't see this disappearing for another 2 years, and hopefully will last even longer.

While I also hoped games would be less, you must understand that this would be stupid as hell to do. Metal Gear AC!D is a very long, complicated game for a launch title. All launch title games are usually shorter, and less graphically intense then the end of the road series of games. Anyways, my point is that these games are as long as normal console games, and look almost as good as them. They can charge this price because they basically are just like normal console games (alot of them are 'ports' or exact copies).

Pricing is about right for how must it costs to make the thing along with the quality of games coming out for it.

You're wrong about that one. PSP has something like a 1:4 selling ratio with a DS.

And to rebut your claims that Sony is king of the planet

1) DS has/will have wifi games
2) DS most certainly has a better "controller" (if used properly, the touch screen)
3) V-Pocket/Play-Yan whatever you want to call it, = MP3/WMV/etc etc for GBA/DS
4) DS Also has system-to-system connection
5) Nintendo's PDA software will have web browsing... and currently, Wipeout's browser isn't exactly what I'd call "web browsing"
6) Who the hell wants a cell phone that big? Let alone having another cell phone...

Now let's not make this yet another flame war... the end.
I just think that the system will be the next game gear. Superior graphics, but couldn't match the superior execution that Nintendo had. There wasn't a lot of good reasons to own a Game Gear unless you wanted colour, or a 3-hour-long battery. I think it will be good competition, but will remain niche.

Sony really made a cool handheld with the PSP. Movies, Games, Music, Pictures, and future camera, keyboard(mini), and internet browsing. But honestly, how many times are you going to use a web browser when you have to be near a Wireless router? Nintendo's lack of games for the DS, and the constant remakes of old titles such as Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, and others are lame. When your most amazing game coming out is a puppy simulator, you know what to expect in the future. Some PSP games coming are, Battlefield 2, Dead to Rights, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo 4 Mobile, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, and others. Also, watching movies and listening to my favorite songs on the go is so great. Especially movies, wow, the screen is so bright, and beautiful. I suggest a PSP if you're a on-the-go kind of person.

the thing is, ive played those to death already. and i dont feel like spending another 250 for a system, and 50 for a game i have played too much already. maybe if i didnt have a ps2 already, it might be an option. if i want a movie player, ill buy a dedicated movie player with a massive hard drive. same for mp3 player. my pda does web browsing. my digital game takes way better pics than that thing could. my cell phone is for calls. the technology is not there for an all in one system that can compete with dedicated systems. its jsut an overpriced gadjet right now, and while some people like gadjets, they dont sell very well.

I've played my PSP just about every day since March 24th, usually 30 minutes to 2 hours per day.

And for what it's worth, i got my PSP on launch day and just sold it yesterday. Total play time about 10 hours.

Long load times, horrible QC with the screen defects, prices a bit high on the games and insanely high on UMD movies. Sure there will eventually be some games i'd like to play on it but it just wasn't doing anything for me at the moment.

I don't think it'll die anytime soon necesarily but i don't think the market is going to be that large for it and therefore game developers aren't going to make it a priority for them.

I dont like the DS i think its too damn big and why the hell do i need a touch screen?

I do like the PSP it looks amazing very slick

But the PSP will lose out because older people dont generally need portable gaming when i was a kid it was cool but now i dont have time for it- especially taking out a fragile device like that.

Kids will still go with DS and the PSP will fade into memory.

Why are people blasting the PSP. Really there is nothing on the market quite like, and sony did a damn good job desgining it. I know its not perfect, but nothing eles comes close. I am sorry DS has no games for it but one, Mario 64 and thats it. I already own 4 great games for it. I am on the go alot, and I throw anime all the time, music as well. Its really easy to get full dvds on there granted it does take some time, but its still free. Also remember this is sonys first ever handheld. I was not expecting sony to do this well. I think the games can only get better and it should be around for a couple years easy.

This is a good point, but actually, the "Buzz" market will have a bigger effect in the USA. I see PSP carving that out, and having some success in that market.

Well, Warioware is supposed to be the shizzle. ;) The lack of DS software support here is a valid concern (though EA has helped that in a big way, as far as their mass-appeal franchises), but that's a problem that has already been rectified in Japan, and will make its way over here sooner rather than later. Obviously backwards compatibility to GBA does not hurt. It's even more telling that Nintendo has had the success that they have with the DS domestically with their software support lagging behind.

everyday in my house, everday on campus at college? A lot of colleges have completely wireless campuses... now whether or not the psp can use that (since a lot also have some sort of proprietary software to let you access it to prevent from torrenting and stuff...)

either way, its going to come down to the games... the games are what sells the console the most not the features it has...
