Some important relevant tidbits -
Late September 2016 titles will require post launch patch support for Neo.
October 2016 titles will require launch support for the Neo.

Neo will essentially have a Polaris 10 class GPU with 5.5GB available to games.

Why is this relevant in the PC video cards section? Because this can have an effect (depending on how developers and fast they do actually target the Neo) on the performance requirements of near future game releases. Which in turn will effect what one considers a "1080p card."

Right now the minimum recommended system requirements for the AMD side are Pitcairn based cards which is the nearest equivalent to what the PS4 is configured as.

For the sake of the side tracking argument let's just ignore Nvidia for now to avoid that thread derailment. The focus being on AMD as the architectural similarities are more easy and controlled to compare.

2.1Ghz Jaguar cores as well that sets the low bar. Seems the PS4 Neo will get trashed by the Scorpio when it comes. Also the next Xbox is to have 12GB GDDR5, meaning a whooping 4GB more for the actual games. This should be really good for future games.

Being the graphics sub forum I was going to avoid the CPU discussion.

As for Xbox Scorpio one should keep that in mind but I wouldn't necessarily be too concerned about it yet due to several factors -

1) It is still quite far out by comparison for holiday 2017. We will likely at worst be at the tail end of the current product cycle for PC graphics.
2) Right now it seems like MS is really targeting it for 4K and VR as opposed to higher fidelity at 1080p.
3) The adoption rate for it is a bit more questionable based on the relative popularity of the PS4 vs Xbox One at the moment which may or may not affect developer uptake.

But if Xbox Scorpio is actually going bring developers to push its hardware for 1080p resolutions then there is going to only be one current graphics card which may enough performance last till, and that is a big question mark.

Its worth noticing the graphics part "only" runs at 911Mhz. Its performance may be somewhere near RX 470.

I also wonder how the console crowd is going to take this. Since the argument of console vs PC is eroding fast. I also wonder how many PS4 games that will have issues on the PS4 Neo due to being too close coded to HW that even tiny changes can mess it up.

Similarly though the PS4 is really cut down Pitcairn closer to a R7 265 as opposed to the R9 270x. But that extra performance isn't really enough of a significant separation as I don't think most hardware enthusiasts consider the R9 270x a 1080p card anymore in the sense that they know consider the RX 480.

At the end you always need more graphics then the console. Part of it is due to inherent efficiency differences (although I think this part is quite a bit over estimated by people). Another is due to interaction differences such as sitting far away with a control vs sitting close with mouse/kb feels difference even with the same performance (although the move to VRR alleviates this somewhat). Also the last part is that the PC enthusiast is looking at beyond console equivalent graphics, and those last mile type fidelity increases typically carry with them a disproportionate hardware requirement increase.

This is why what people really considered "recommended" performance was one segment up over Pitcairn (Tahiti) or two segments up (Hawaii).

ive never seen one of these "leaks" before, it contains interesting info but does not look as professional as I would expect from a "confidential document". but like I said never seen one before. all the graphic improvements look good and will give a substantial boost to image quality but what I liked best was the VSR it. down scaling 4k on a 1080p display will look great!

With the announcement of Scorpio, I don't understand why Sony wouldn't just push back the neo release date and make it something better. They know what microsoft has planned, why not take that info and bring the neo closer up to par with that console?

Sony is probably too far into the process to make it better spec'd, even if it is minimal. They're pushing for this holiday season, if they push it back they lose sales. It is better to get something out way better than what is out in the market today vs. what is going to be better in over a year.

Those are ooooooooooooold documents. March ones if i recall correctly, they are the ones that leaked to Giantbomb/Eurogamer et all.

edit to add:

Still against Scorpio, expect an Original Xbox vs PS2 situation, Microsoft has no hold worldwide to make the spec increase matter, specially one year later and with most xb1 exclusives coming to pc.
