E3 2005: PS3 Price Revealed?
One of the most expensive consoles ever created, according to Japanese reports.
by Matt Casamassina

May 17, 2005 - According a an article published in the May 17th edition of Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, the PlayStation 3 could be one of the most expensive mass-market videogame consoles ever created. Officials from Sony apparently told the newspaper that PlayStation 3s would sell in Japan for "less than 50,000 yen each." That translates to about $465 US dollars.

Sony unveiled its next-generation console at the Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005. The beast of a machine utilizes the powerful Cell processor, a custom-designed graphics chip by Nvidia, and 512MBs of RAM for a quantum leap in performance. The system will also be the first-ever to support high-def movie-playback out of the box, taking advantage of the upcoming Blu-ray Disc format.

Sony claims that PS3 will be roughly 35 times more powerful than PS2. If Mainichi Shimbun is correct, gamers will be asked to pay a hefty price for the high-end functionality.

IGN was unable to validate this news with Sony officials. Stay tuned for more as the story breaks.

Unnamed sources floating an ambiguous figure a year out from release.

That's called bad journalism.

Thats way out of hand, I wouldnt expect sony to sell very many if it is true. Personally I think its fake. I think the PS3 is a very capable machine because it can do so many more things then videogames. If it was just the console I would only pay $299 but concidering its promising to have a bunch of other media capabilities I might consider to go as high as $399 but absolutley no higer. And I expect a good warrenty too. :p

Sony is going to have to price at $299 if it wants to compete for the mainstream gamer with Microsoft and Nintendo.

Oh this just in PS3 could be released in November in North America first instead of Japan.

An early launch might have a lot of negative press if the games arent their to back it up though.

God the thought of PS3 this year makes me crap my pants. Hard.

Realistically though I bet we wont see it till a little before or after the 06 E3 :( :(

Most likely, Hopefully we will have talked them out of that ugly controller and a reasonable price point by then.

From what I have heard, Xbox 360 is supposed to start at $400, so I expect PS3 to do the same. I heard the price from a gamestop employie though, so its probably wrong (freaking retard, talked with him before)

its the new millenium, i would expect 399 at 1st with all tht hardware...i remember my saturn costing 399 when it came out

Right on par with the NeoGeo (1990) according to this.
The main thing that held this machine back was the price. At launch time it cost about $500 in the US, which was far beyond the reach of most people. Added to that, the games were also very expensive at around $200+ each, so only true die hard fans with LOTS of spare cash could really afford it.
I feel like that price is a little low for the console.. but then again $500 was a lot more to spend on a console back then.. especially to a 10-11 year old. :D
I soooo wanted one of those. Still do.. hmm...

Gamestop/EB only have a holding point price. Nothing official. They just put a large price in the system so they can start taking pre-orders.
