The new 1.80 firmware update that is out today enables the PS3 to upscale DVDs, PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games up to 1080p. The DVD upscaling requires the use of an HDMI cable while the games do not. I tried this out and, as with most video upscalers, I didn’t see a whole lot of difference but the video quality is a little better and best of all, it is free.

The upgrade, available for download worldwide Thursday, will improve the visual quality of PlayStation 2 games, as well as original PlayStation games, although it won't be quite as dazzling as the quality of PS3 games, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. officials said.

I installed the update last night...

The new firmware also supports down sampling of BR movies to 720p. Furthermore, it added UPNP media server support, so you can stream video/audio from your PC to the PS3. All in all, it was a very decent firmware upgrade…

Where did you find it? I looked on the US Playstation 3 system software update website and they only have the 1.70 update available for download.

Wow, this really takes care of a number of complaints that ps3 users had. I had expected a number of these improvements, but not all at once and certainly not as soon as they've come. I had anticipated needing to run linux for streaming of video and music for a while, but unless the stuff is in a non-supported codecs, it shouldn't be necessary any longer. The only complaint left is the lack of games, but there are a few that look pretty good coming in the next couple of months...I can almost remove my htpc from the setup and put it back on my desk.

Also supports 1080p24f output.
PC and Video RGB scale
Networking with DLNA devices

Makes a pretty big difference in games:

It was a big update that alot of the guys over at AVS wanted. I predict that 2.0 is coming in the fall with home and that's another very large update.

Did you try right-click show picture? Sometimes the load up and sometimes I have to right-clcik.

They are GoW screens before and after scaling on the PS3.

Not sure what picture Silentbob was going for, but it improves the color saturation of games too (I think that's what they're called)

Check out the two pics showing the difference between limited and full in the PS3

Theory on limited/full
I believe they have fixed the issue of improper video levels on some displays. There's a setting for "RGB full range (HDMI)" that can be set for full or limited. I think this is NOT related to BTB or IRE, but rather a setting for remapping colors to video (216-235) or PC levels (0-255). Before, it only would output video levels. This should help those who have a washed-out image because the display wants PC levels instead of video levels.
and indeed there is a giant washed out image thread over at AVS where this seems to have worked although some are now saying the blacks are crushed. Depends on the display I guess. Also, you should recalibrate your display after adjusting the source.

I checked it out on my friends PS3 using a retail copy of Shrek, it made a slight difference but I really can't complain. He's got a 1080p projector that stands out like 120+"

I like the streaming option tho... I think I need to get my own soon.
