ps3 replacement lazer ?

just picked up a used ps3 and it doesnt read disks . where can i buy a replacement lazer and how hard would it be to replace? also if you have the part number i need id appreciate it.
 
Do you know if it is still within the 1 year warranty period? If so, you could get Sony to fix it for free.. otherwise its $150. I don't know if you thought of that yet but its another route to take if you don't want to replace it yourself. Albeit, at a higher price than what you could find yourself paying online for a replacement laser, though.

Not sure if its been a year hasnt arrived yet ,but thanks for the idea ill look into that .how would i know if its covered or not?
 
You'll have to contact Sony. I haven't done this personally but I think they'll ask for the serial number on the outside of the PS3. They should be able to walk you through it. I do think you need a receipt but you could try saying it was a gift so you don't have one.
 
thanks for the reply.. one last question i have a shot at getting a 60gb ps3 for 149.00 but ps3 it plays music and dvds but no games . .... possible blue ray laser bad? would it be worth the cost ?
 
If you can get it for $149 and then send it to Sony to be fixed for $150 (out of warranty) you are getting a very nice BC system for roughly $300. Which would be a great deal imo especially if you have any PS2 games laying around or want to play any.
 
My laser on my ps3 that i got on ebay went out. All you need to do is the online submission for repair. They send you an empty box and you mail it back. Make sure you check in warranty. For them they want you to keep up with a receipt for a YEAR to still be in warranty. However i sent mine back knowing full well i didnt have it or even know when it was bought. They called and i told them i didnt have one since it was a "gift". They fixed it for free at that point. :)

Will say that it was recent, so it was around christmas time anyways and the manufacture date on it was Sept 2007.

To know the exact part number for the PS3 laser you will want to take the broken one out and look at the numbers stamped on the deck. Look on Youtube for a video on how to open up (and void any remaining warranty on) your PS3. Take important note. The tools are pretty easy except for the TAMPER PROOF torx driver. Tamper proof is not the same as a regular torx. I learned that one the hard way.

well i have the 40gb ps3 sitting here. it turns on and everything is fine except the drive. the blue light comes on, theres a lil gray spinng ball at top right of the screen when a disk is inserted but it just spins and never reads the disks, and the blue light stays on until i eject it.

Try the full system restore, that could be a firmware issue.

for similar issues and proposed fixes. Mine did the same until I did a full system restore.

Yes. You did a full system restore? Mine took hours...make sure you're doing the full complete system wipe and restore, not just the short ones.
 
ok well how do u do it ? first time with a ps3. im doing a full format now is that what you mean?

settings > "restore ps3 system". It'll give you warning that it'll erase all game data and whatnot, and will take a while. Mine took 14 hours :0
 
ok thats the one im trying now , juding from what ive hread on that post about 20 pages so far , its not a laser problem at all , its the 2.53 firmware . i can tbelive sony isnt getting nailed over this this is just insane. formatting is currently at 9% says appox 2hrs and 43 min . ill keep you guys posted thanks for the help.

well so far 1 full restore and nothing, trying again.

quick question , is there anyway to download the demos off ps3 online store by pc and transfer them to my hard drive?
 
anyone ever done the ps3 laser swap and would be interested in doin mine? id pay of course. experinced only .
 
UPDATE!!!! well at 1:30 am i decided to take the ps2 apart and see what was going on , being it out of warranty any . well i got the drive out and noticed when i stuck a dvd in the drive everything was looking ok until the spin up. well theres wasnt one.disk would go in ,and it wouldnt spin. anyonehave a definate answer for this ?

the model number on the laser is ks-400a or something like that.

when i insert the disk , it wouldnt spin at all it just sat there.no movement whatsoever
 
When the one I bought broken on eBay did that, I replaced the laser. This part is all you need. I know they don't exactly give them away, but it is cheaper than a Sony repair.

If you have gotten as far as opening the blu ray drive and seeing the part number, actually replacing the deck will be no problem. Good luck!

Yeah, there are a lot of little tiny moving parts in that drive, but as long as you're careful, replacing the laser assembly should be no problem. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I've fixed a couple of PS3 drives by replacing the motor and laser assemblies. Made a nice bit of money doing it too (which I ended up spending on PS3 games, d'oh!) :p

thanks for the link to the part , thats the one i was looking at. but yea im in no hurry to do it, maybe next week ill order the deck. bright side is while im not running it , it cant break:)

Yeah, you definitely want the security torx with the hole in the middle.

Although, TBH, I was able to open mine up by just wedging a tiny flathead screwdriver between the center "security" nub and one of the face edges. It was a little fiddly, and the nut got a little gouged up, but it doesn't really matter since the warranty is voided as soon as you peel off that sticker. The only point of that bolt is to make it impossible to open the system, so I just took it out on all the systems I opened up.
 
Update again!!! after reading up more and more on this i decided to check again ,

when the ps3 powers up my laser moves towards the front of the drive, and the lens moves up and down 3 times then stops , ok while this is goin on shouldnt i see some kinda light come out of the lens ? mine does not.
