Hey guys, im a pc gamer... i dont do console games.
However, I have extra cash left over... even after maxing out my gaming computer... (check my sig)

so what should i get? ps3? or xbox 360?

and if i get ps3.. should i get 20g? or 60g? (why would i need all that GB?)

one more thing... whos winning the battle - HD DVD v. Blue Ray?

money isnt the problem. so if you know anything about this subject, please help me to buy the right one.

oh and it seems like ps3 has more games that i would not find on pc,... unlike xbox (maybe because of the fact that its microsoft, lot of their games are on pc... just a thought)

so what do you guys think? which one?

Your best answer is look at the library of games you'd like to play. I think too many people worry about which console brand name, and ignore the games that are available and will be available in the future.

Personally I went with the 360 because:
1. More games out now
2. More games short term in the future that I want to play.
3. More games long term that I want to play.
4. The upcoming PS3 exclusive games aren't my cup of tea.
5. Price - Got mine with a 100 rebate from microcenter :)
6. I like to game online with friends, and xbl dominates the PS3 in this regard.

bioshock
mass effect
crackdown
alan wake
halo3

are just a few of the games I'm looking forward to. Since I don't care for FF or MGS series, PS3's exclusives don't really interest me much.

to your questions: I believe yes that the PS3 can connect to a monitor via VGA. Blu ray probably has an edge right now, but if you ask me neither format will become standard in the way that vhs and dvd did.

xbox360...for the games, xbla, online, and features. It's just a more rounded and mature system at the moment.

But really the games;
This years main exclusives:

xbox360: Mass Effect, BioShock, Crackdown, Froza2, ShadowRun, Alan Wake, Too Human, Blue Dragon, Halo 3, Lost Odyssey, Fable2.
PS3: Lair, MotorStorm, MSG4 (this year???), Heavenly Sword (this year???), DMC4, Tekken5, Warhawk.

Already released main exclusives:

xbox360: Gear of War, Dead Rising, Viva Pinata, PRG3, DOA4, Lost Planet, Test Drive, MotoGP, CoD2, Condemned, GRAW, Kameo, PDZ, etc.
PS3: Resistance, Gaint Crab game... cant remember the name.

Then there is the fact that games such as FEAR, Vegas, Oblivion, Saints Row, Enchanted Arms, Double Agent, etc. have been out for 3-12 months on the xbox360 and are still not released for the PS3.

This doesn't even take into account the xbox360 is $100-300 cheaper and xbl totally destroys the ps3's online. Looking at xbl market place and the the xbox360's dashboard features; it has about 70 retail game demo, plus another 40+ xbl arcade trail games, ingame background downloading, ingame background music, ingame access to friends list, ingame voice chat for all games, achievements, media extender, movie downloads, etc.

Another gripe I have with my PS3 is the controller. After forgiving it for not having rumble, WTF WERE THEY THINKING NOT USING REPLACABLE BATTERIES! Having to plug in your controller to recharge it totally defeats the purpose of a wireless controller. The xbox360 quick charge kit is much nicer than the plug and play idea.

And as for HDDVD vs. Blu-Ray, do you really care?

QFT. This person knows what he's talking about. I recently went with the 360 for basically the same reasons he did (well, more price, too, because I'm a poor student)

PS3 all the way!!! (60GB To Be Exact!!)

Forget about the haters, they are all lying. (Do not feel offended people.) You know why they hate the PS3, because they can't afford it!

Anyways, give the PS3 sometime. After a couple of months, PS3 will be the top. New games will be coming! I mean come on, 360 came out in 2005, and now they have a whole bunch of games for it. PS3 was just released, so again give it some time. Also, PS3 is worth the 600 bucks. Why?..Blue Ray! Also free online extras unlike the 360. And yes the PS3 can hook up to a LCD monitor using a HDMI-to-DVI adapter.

PS - Here's a tip, do not read ones thoughts about a PS3 unless they have one.

With that kind of awesome logic how can I resist going out tonight to buy one? Just curious, what was I lying about?

I agree with the above guy, look at the game lineups and see which appeals to you more.

but to answer the other questions

the 60gb PS3 also has built in wifi and a media card reader, those are more important factors than the HDD (since you can put whatever size drive you want in it).

At the moment Blu-Ray is winning in both support and sales. The tide could change but unless some company puts out an extremely cheap HD-DVD player I dotn really see it happening.

You can connect the PS3 to your monitor with an HDMI-> DVI cable, but only if your monitor supports HDCP.

I'd say buy both if you can (the more the merrier), but it really just comes down to whichever has the games and features you want.

I went with the ps3 since all the series I like are on the playstation platform, that and I have a pretty nice gaming PC so i can usually still play all the good 360 games since they usually end up on PC as well. The hard drive on the ps3 is upgradeable so really the biggest difference between the two models is the card readers and built in wireless networking.

I had a PS3, I sold it and got a 360. The PS3 needs time to mature. When it does mature though, it's going to own!

The 360 though will still be competitive in terms of AAA exclusives for quite a while. Personally I'd go with the 360 again. I don't think you'll regret it.

Depends on your budget but we have both Xbox360 and PS3 and even though right now Xbox has more games i totally love the PS3. One thing though the PS3 caused for me many headaches setting up but once up its great.

xbox360: Mass Effect, BioShock, Crackdown, Froza2, ShadowRun, Alan Wake, Too Human, Blue Dragon, Halo 3, Lost Odyssey, Fable2.

PS3: Lair, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword (still this year???), Tekken6, Warhawk.

Bioshock and Alan Wake are not X360 exclusive. They're also on PC and most people with high end systems would probably prefer it on PC.

Blue Dragon, from what I hear is a quality game, IF you like that anime style of RPG.

I wouldn't be bragging about Fable 2, LOL.

But yeah it comes down to exclusive titles. The big names for PS3 like Metal Gear and Gran Turismo most definitely won't arrive until 2008.

If you're going by what's out now, and what's coming this year, X360 wins hands down.
If we're looking down the road for the next 2-3 years when both systems are in their prime, I'd say it's a much harder decision. Really if money is no object, the ideal solution is to own both systems.

I'd say get the PS3. Better japanese support, so you get stuff like Final Fantasy, Tekken, MGS and such that you won't necessarily get on a PC or Xbox360. Of course, everyone has different tastes in games, so that's up to you. The PS3 is a better unit all around; you get blu-ray, HDMI, quieter system, ability to play PS1 and PS2 games (again, stuff you won't get on a PC), PSP integration, etc.

The differences between the 60gb PS3 and the 20GB ps3 are (1) HDD size, (2) WiFi on the 60GB model (3) Memory stick/SD card slots on 60 GB model.

Keep in mind that the PS3 uses a standard 2.5" SATA harddrive, so you can just buy a larger laptop harddrive online, and install it yourself (the PS3 manual even provides instructions). The 20 GB should be enough though, unless you go crazy with demos, HD video and stuff. A wifi adapter hasn't been released yet for the ps3, so if you do have a wireless network and the 20GB model, you'll need a wireless bridge adapter. Plain old ethernet cable works too.

There's little chance we'll see a clear winner to the Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle, there's enough stubbornness around so one of those formats will linger on, even if other one becoming much more accepted. But here's the run down as of now;

-Blu-ray has better studio support (5 exclusive studios to HD-DVD's one.)
-Blu-ray has broader industry support by consumer electronics manufacturers
-Blu-ray has more titles coming out than HD-DVD on a per-week basis
-Blu-ray disks were outselling HD-DVDs by a 3:1 margin by late January
-Blu-ray has a dramatically higher install base if you include PS3 sales.
-Overall disk library is about the same (~170 titles for BR, ~160 for HD-DVD)

The time is not right to pick up a PS3 just yet....this time next year it should have a fairly good catalog of games and the launch titles will be value priced. The PS3 is about potential in the future but the 360 is about great gaming right now.

I didn't own an xbox, but fable2 has promise if it's an improvement on the first. The first one sold over 3 million iirc. Pretty decent game for the time.

I hope you enjoy your PS3, but I don't think that's a great reason to choose one over a 360. The following are all kickass 360 titles that either won't be released for PC/PS3 or are a long ways off:

Gears of War
Halo 3
Crackdown
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Mass Effect
Viva Pinata (shame it had poor sales)

Splinter Cell and RB6:Vegas have been bashed by a lot of people as poor ports.

But, you also have some kickass exclusives to look forward to. Enjoy!

asking for help on the internet about a preference question is the worst thing you could do.

have friends that already own them? play and then decide.

"money isnt the problem. "
get both, and win

BioShock and Alan Wake are MS exclusives. Bottom line you can't play these games on the other consoles. Just because some PC gamers consider themselves elitists doesn't change the fact these games are exclusive to MS. And as far as PC gamers enjoying these games on the PC more is total opinion BS. I have been gaming on the PC since the early 90s and barely touch my high end PC now a days for gaming. Gaming from my couch and relaxing with a controller is more enjoyable.

BTW: Favorite PC games include Wing Commander, DukeNukem3d, Quake, Doom 1/2, WarCraft2, RedAlert, Half Life 1/2.

Here's an idea of what some of the regulars around here think about the console wars:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1159454

I have a 360 but not because I dislike the PS3 for any reason, and not because I can't afford it as ps3guru03 (a.k.a. The Jackass) implies. I don't need a multimedia machine. I have several computers, a nice sound system, an mp3 player, etc. I just wanted a console that was good for gaming. 360 has more of the types of games I like, so I bought it. Guess it all depends on what you want to do with your machine. PS3 has a lot of promise, but until some of that comes to fruition I'm not gonna bite.

hmm very nice inputs.
however pikachuman... i dont know if i was partially biased from the beginning, but what you said kind of won me over.

so basically i should better go with 60G PS3... hm...

Play both and look at the future game listings on both systems and go which you would prefer. As previously mentioned the PS3 definitely has bonuses that I like and much prefer over the 360. I got my 360 as an impulse buy and because all my friends had it so I could play online with them but learned that I am really not a FPS person. I also have a Wii, which is great fun. Late this year or early next year I plan to pick up a PS3. I love the built-in WiFi, expandable HD space, OS capabilities, etc.

Test them out and see which you like the best and what offers the most to you.

wifi = wireless internet reception in your home if you have a wireless router
sd cards are memory cards that are portable.

He said he's not a console gamer but is interested in titles that won't appear on PC. The guy who posted those titles as justification over a PS3 was in error because in light of the thread creator's question, it was not relevant. What you said is true, those games are console exclusives on X360, but that's not the same as exclusive.

And FWIW, I don't know a single person that buys SLI 8800GTX videocards but would prefer to play the same game on a console. Especially a game like Alan Wake.

Intel Quad x6700
2x 8800 GTX
BFG Nforce 680i Mobo
4x 1G Corsair XMS2 w/ Heat Spreader

320G Seagate Barracuda Hard Drive
BFG 800watt PSU

Just found it funny too that you have this PC setup and don't know what wifi is :p

Yeah yeah, English isn't everyone's first language and I'm a bastard :)

just have comp jealousy, don't mind me.

lol.. dont hate wink* ;)

i just dont know the terms... i really got into pc couple months ago.. n built that system on new years.. n loving it ever since..
and still have the old ethernet cable bellsouth dsl has given me 3 1/2 yrs ago.. lol

anyways.. back to the subject...

as i already have mentioned, i'd prefer to get a console that has good selection of games that would never come across my path as a pc gamer...
some of the posts answered what i was lookng for... call of duty.. and many fps games... heck.. my rig's benchmark would crush all of them...(3dMarko6: 17620... im sure i can get it higher since i dont overclock)
and seems to me.. ps3's list of current and upcoming games have games that i would only enjoy on a console platform.

ive made up my mind.
i checked for availability at a local gamestop store and they have a PS3 60Gig.
im picking it up tm.

Also, i ran across on this forum, where a member posted up a links to sales report of blue ray and hd... n seems to me.. blue ray - i have the player in the living room n it rocks - has def. has my affinity n is sure to win.

Sounds to me like ya already had your mind made up seeing as how 95% of the responses favored the 360 and for good reason. If money is no object the smartest thing would be to buy the 360 now, and the PS3 in a year from now or around Christmas time at the earliest.

XBOX360 FTW

Better games
Better looking games
WAY better online service
HD format is undecided but I still have lots of faith in HDDVD
XBLA is great
Achievements are starting to mean something
HDMI and Larger HDD maybe just around the corner

The PS3 will have the best games the only thing worth getting an xbox360 for is maybe Halo3 (multiplayer) all the current games suck IMO. Yes I said it, gears of war is a buggy online glitch fest. Besides microsoft is retrofitting the xbox360 now trying to add hdmi, a better power saving processor and they just added a quiter drive. Wait a while price drops are coming soon.

Besides the ps3 also has Blue-ray and can run Linux.

I guess it all depends on what kind of person you are. New hotness or old and busted. :D

I went with the PS3 mainly because of the blu-ray player and the list of upcoming games are great. I don't see myself enjoying the games from the 360's current and future line up due to the fact that there are many shooters and those are best on the PC imo. One drawback of the PS3 is the lack of games at the moment but that will change soon in March. I am currently having a blast watching blu-ray movies and playing old PS2 games (ps2 game library is huge).

I went with the PS3 because I'm not the type of person who owns multiple consoles of the same generation, I simply made a long term investment. I'm so used to the PS2's controls and always felt awkward when using the xbox controllers. Although the PS3 controllers don't carry removable batteries, I think USB extension cables and charging stations ensure the batteries never dry up while gaming. And not very many people game constantly enough to drain the batteries, even so, those are usually single player games and you can switch to a second controller while you charge the other one. I believe the PS3 will catch up, there are still some unknown exclusives that could become hits on the system too, just not for a while.

The main thing about the PS3 that I really believe in is Blu-Ray and its exclusives. Casino Royale comes out next month and it won't be on HD-DVD. And there will be a few blockbusters that will be the same.

And being a pro motorsport junkie, F1: CE and GT5 are also the titles that I gotta have and will not live without. Sure you might say there are games with better physics and damage modeling but I think the GT series will have those in the future, and to be honest, the game has a better appreciation to cars but the main drawback is the loss of force feedback in steering wheels but hopefully that will get rectified. Its also a game that can be enjoyed by everyone, and trust me I have plenty of guests that come over.

My setup already includes a 60 inch Sony SXRD TV and a 6.1 audio system that will also be upgraded with a HDMI switching A/V 7.1 receiver in the near future. Perhaps the extra Blu-Ray space with allow more lossless audio codecs including 1080P video. My GF has also played all of the FF series and will continue to do so not to mention she also has a Wii of her own.

I'd say 360 as well.:D

Good Choice wubbie412! I hope you enjoy your PS3. :)

Oh and EvilTwinSkippy, you better watch your mouth.

Wasnt bioshock just announced as in fact going to the PS3 as well? But that aside, to the OP.

If you are looking at Today, the 360 absolutely has better offerings. You cant beat their XBL service.

PS3 though is a pure gaming machine. You also can import japanese titles with ease which is a huge plus to some people, you get a blu-ray drive, which blu-ray is outselling HDDVD 3:1 right now.
VF5 is out today, F1 CE next week and so many hardcore games coming out over the next year. I have both, and i enjoy them both. Although from the look of games coming to the PS3 over the next year i have a feeling i will be enjoying my PS3 more than my 360.

Good lord. 17620 on 3DMARK06 ? Bah.

Wifi = wireless network
SD Card is used by cameras and some other devices. The 60 GB model has slots for memory stick, SD and some other camera formats. So you could just snap some pics, stick them in your 60GB ps3, and display them in HD.

Also remember you can use PS2 games on that system, so you can pick up great titles like God of War II, Shadow of the Collosus, Ico, and possibly Katamari Damachi. These won't look anywhere near the quality you're use to (judging by that PC), but they should still be fun.
