PS3 Folding

Yea, but who believes anything on CNN anyways.
 
The interesting thing was the quote from Pande saying that 10,000 PS3's would increase F@H output by 5 times :eek: So that would mean that 10k PS3's is equal to about 800k-1M PC's (going by their 200k pcs quote in the same article), or 80-100x more effective than the average PC. Somehow I doubt that, but if even 5-10x more effective that would be a big thing.

To participate, users will just download a program into the PS3's hard drive. Then they just need to leave the machine on when they're not playing. The Folding@home team will divide their complex calculations into manageable chunks and then send it to the participating machines. The program and data will take up 10 to 20 megabytes - or about the size of a handful of MP3 files, Pande said.

When the PS3 is done processing its chunk it will send the data back.

Makers say the program won't run when someone is using the PS3, because it might bog down the game.

Eh? I thought the PS3 launch date was pushed back like four months? Is it still on track for a November release?

 
That number is old. I thought I read something on the from page of [H] that said that the count was down to 400k PS3s for the holiday season.

It would be if it was on the console by default, but people will have to actively acquire and enable it...that is if it will even be ready for the launch.
 
anyone have any word on how this will work?

I know with the PS2 you had to instal linux and what not. I wonder if it would be as simple as a download.

I suspect it will be alot easier with PS3 due to it having a hard drive. For PS2 you had to buy the Linux "kit" which shipped with a hard drive.
