Added support for adding and removing channels dynamically.

Added a local time display in the LIVE CHANNEL.

Updated Mood categories for automatic music selection.

Added support to enable Folding@home™ Expert Mode which disables all other channels and features that may impact simulation performance. Folding@home™ Expert Mode can be activated by navigating to: Options Menu > [Configuration] > [Folding@home].

Interested In seeing what kind of a performance thisw new "Expert Mode" will have.

Thanks for the heads up. I rarely check my PS3 and just let it fold. :)

dont worry, one 8800 is like what, 100 PS3s? lol

The "Expert Mode" probably won't have much effect on my PS3 folding since I minimise so the graphics don't show and shut off my monitor anyway, but every little bit helps. :p

I did have a small amout of time to play with it, It does seem to only shut off the fancy graphics as you said. I still have the globe as the back drop however. Wish they could do more for it.

Yea but every little bit helps, but thanks for the sarcasm. Dont let the door hit you ass on the way out.

Yea, I'm not usually one to tell a man his business, but pissing off the mod usually isn't good. :D

I can only assume that his account was hacked and someone else was posting under his name becouse the mods are supposed to prevent stupid pointless trolling not add to it.

I really wish the points were more on a PS3. Is there an official reason why it's so low? I mean, it's low enough for me to just shut it off and barely see a drop in PPD.

I think it only uses like 2 DSPs or whatever
I wish they could optimize a little more for it, because look how much blade servers can crank out, and its pretty much the same thing. Plus, it would be easier to farm with PS3s than other things if they could get the PPD up enough, Ive left mine folding for a year once and never had a problem

lies... thats how job to piss the mods off.. if we aint pissin em off.. then we aint doing our jobs and that means they aint doing their jobs.. :p

Show me a Power X Cell Blade running F@H. There isn't a F@H program for them. Dunno where you got that info.

I upgraded my PS3 yesterday and started it folding on an old account. It seems to be giving the same PPD as before, but like the rest of you, I shut off all the stuff that could have affected performance anyway. It's nice to see Sony hasn't forgotten about it, though.

hmm, I thought the blade's were crazy fast, Ive been told that they were hella good folders, but I guess thats what I get for listening to some people. I studied a little of the cell back in college and I figure someone could get much more use out of it than what we have, but hey, its all points right?

From the official FAQ:

It seems that the PS3 is more than 10X as powerful as an average PC. Why doesn't it get 10X PPD as well?

We balance the points based on both speed and the flexibility of the client. The GPU client is still the fastest, but it is the least flexible and can only run a very, very limited set of WUs. Thus, its points are not linearly proportional to the speed increase. The PS3 takes the middle ground between GPUs (extreme speed, but at limited types of WU's) and CPU's (less speed, but more flexibility in types of WUs). We have picked the PS3 as the natural benchmark machine for PS3 calculations and set its points per day to 900 to reflect this middle ground between speed (faster than CPU, but slower than GPU) and flexibility (more flexible than GPU, less than CPU).

In other words, they arbitrarily picked a number. The PPD has gone up slightly from 900 to 1000, but it's still probably lower than it should be. I think I read elsewhere that they didn't want to encourage the "farmers" to buy racks of PS3s, because that might be seen as promotion of Sony, etc.

I know I'd by a rack of PS3s for farming if the price was right, SUPER STABLE, and so easy a caveman could do it

Thats horse crap. My CPU gets more PPD than my PS3. Oh wait, they're measuring it against a P4 cpu...

That's fine, actually. Confirms that I can now shut off my PS3. :)

Starting in 2006, we began looking forward to another major advance in capabilities. This advance utilizes the new Cell processor in Sony’s PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers. With this new technology (as well as new advances with GPUs), we will likely be able to attain performance on the 20 GigaFLOP scale per computer. With about 50,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the PetaFLOP scale. With software from Sony, the PlayStation 3 will contribute to the Folding@home project, pushing FAH another major step forward.

LMAO

20GigaFLOPs?!?! Are you serious!? My old ass video card from 2006 gets 230GigaFLOPS

Oh, and a HD4850 gets 1TeraFLOP, lol @ the PS3 :D

thats kinda like comparing apples to howitzers , not a fair compare

The rv770 may have a theoretical FLOPS in the trillions but compare the PPD to a similarly powered nVidia card and you'll see that theoretical FLOPS doesn't say much about the actual FLOPS. Still it does seem like the CELL chip should be capable of much more f@h computing power than it does, but I guess it should be that way being a entertainment system.

On this topic though, did anyone else hear about the add-in board that Toshiba was making that had a CELL chip on it? It was supposed to be for accelerating video encoding but it would be interesting to get f@h running on something like that.

Its called the SpursEngine. Toshiba actually makes the chips. Its kind of a bastardized CELL using only 4 SPEs and a custom control CPU using a PCIe 1x bus. Its also clocked slower then a PS3's CELL.
