PS3+folding question

If a PS3 is a decent (well it was decent untill the latest crop of video cards) folding box as-is, and a PS3 can run Linux, would a Linux PS3 fold better or worse than stock? Is it worth the effort to try installing Linux and start folding? Or leave it alone and fold?

Maybe I'm wrong, but ia PS3 is multi-core, correct? SMP folding?? :confused:
 
I don't think running a linux client will yield better than the default PS3 client since the hardware is too specialized to take advantage with the smp client.

 
Short answer, leave it alone and fold. :D

Linux SMP is x64 only and Linux console is ia32 or x64 only. The PS3 runs a Cell processor (PPC based) so neither linux client will run on it. Besides that, Sony and Stanford have put a lot of effort into optomizing the PS3 client and work units. Because of this, if you could theoretically use another client, it probably would run worse.

As I suspected. However, it is always fun to question why things are....

I'm less than impressed with what it takes to get Linux running upon a PS3, so this was mostly mental masterbation .
 
I've thought about trying it before, simply as a look what I can do project, but thats probably about as much as it would be good for. Theres also a couple limitations making it quite undesirable as a Linux workstation. You only have 256MB of memory, and the GPU is completely off limits, leaving you with the generic VESA driver for graphics.

I did the Linux install on my PS3. It wasn't that exciting.
I've used it perhaps twice since. The PS3 client is the
way to go. Too bad the ppd don't match the GPU client!

More "D" is the answer.
