For those of you that are using the PS3 client, let's compile an FAQ for new members.

Isn't a key part of an FAQ actually having frequently asked questions? I haven't seen much frequent asking of anything ;)
 
Some people might be wondering how to join team 33 and edit their username., while simulation is running press the triangle key on the controller then identify and join an existing team then type in 33 and then flollow steps 1 and 2 and change donor name to add in your name that you want. :D

I know this is a poorly written FAQ

Would be better if it was in Q/A format. Such as...

Q. How do I configure F@H to fold for Team #33?

A. While the simulation is running, press the triangle button to open the configuration menu, then select Identity. Select join an existing team, and enter 33 as the team number. Then select change donor name to choose the alias you would like to fold under.
 
This can be composed of actual questions, and a setup guide if someone wants to tackle it.
 
Question. If you read the PS3 FAQ (which you get to somehow but I am not turning on my projector to find out) there are 4 or 5 questions. One of which is how to make folding work on the PS3. The 2 answers that it gives are that you can manually start the service by clicking on the F@H startup dashboard icon thingie or you can start it in "autoexec mode" where the heck is autoexec mode and how do I do that instead of having to fire the PJ up every time the power goes out...

In the menu / PS3 OS right before you pick FOLDING@HOME, press triangle and it'll come up.

Yea I know, thats why I said it was a poorly written FAQ. I was busy that time so yea :/ Anyways thanks :)
 
Do the tiny lighted dots around the world represent only the PS3's that are folding, or all systems that are folding?


Also anyone notice there seems to be a PS3 folding at certain times of the day in North Korea? LOL, could that be Kim Jung Il? The dot is located on the coast, northwest of Seoul, southwest of Pyongyang.
 
Are we sure it is PS3's? I thought it was servers or something...I haven't looked it up :p

Q: All my donator (name and team) information is reset every time I leave the F@H client. Is it possible to put in my name and team number only once (and also not have to accept the license agreement every time I start the client)?

Or is this not normal behavior?

My guess would be there is somewhere to save settings that your missing, and it thinks it is your first start each time. I don't have a PS3 though, so I wouldn't know :(

This is not normal behavior at all. It seems to me like it did not get installed correctly or something. Maybe try redownloading it if you can.

Mine I just start it up and then turn the controller off so it doesn't die. I don't have to put my name/ team or accept anything.


 
Yes. If the fah client on the PS3 is not saving your user info between boots, uninstall/reinstall the client again. This has been seen a few times.
 
Doesn't matter what name it goes under and gets submitted in- the cause is a good one. My console has been running F@H since somewhere in the first 20 minutes it became available, minus a few reboots trying to get it to save info.

I have no other use for the system currently. I'm glad I won it in a contest, I'd have been awfully disappointed if I paid $600 just for Folding.

(Note: I have a 16 hour workday, so gaming in it's entirety is out of the question until July. This is not an anti-Sony comment. It's a I-have-no-life comment.)

Update: delete, reinstall: fail. delete, power off, leave alone for a while, reinstall: fail.
Course of action: Let it go and fold for PS3/Team 0. Who I fold with doesn't matter so much as who I'm folding for- all those people hoping for a cure.
 
seems really odd and make me beleave that there might be something more to this....
 
Q: I just signed up for Horde Central, and I fold with my dual core computer and ps3. Does my ps3 count as 1 cpu? Does it increase the amount of GHz i'm folding with?

Apparently, there's also a client coming for nvidia cards. Will that count as a "cpu" as well?

A: Not sure of the cpu count (probably one?), but the PS3 increases your Ghz. The PS3 is a Ghz machine.

CPU count is actually the number of clients that you have running, not CPUs. So yes, it increases your count by one.

However, there has been some debate here about just how accurate the CPU count really is, but I'll leave that for another discussion. :D

So CPU is more like... "clients per unit?" I guess that sort of makes sense.
 
And it gets better. The count is made by unique machine ID's, which are generated on the client being installed. So if you wipe out the folding dir and create a new one, you get a new ID generated, and another CPU added to the count. And if you have an older system that takes more than 7 days to finish a work unit, it can drop off the 7 day list if even though it is still active.

So in short, if you have a small number of boxes running and can keep track of it all, you might find the CPU count meaningful. Otherwise, check that your boxes are still running as often as you can and hope for the best. :D
