PS3 controller won't charge + related weird behavior

Recently I haven't been able to turn on the PS3 using the controller PS button. The only way I can turn the PS3 on is through the actual power button or through my PS3 Bluray remote's PS button. The only way I can use the controller is by plugging it into the PS3 after the PS3 is turned on. At this point the controller's LEDs will blink a few times before switching to only LED 1 being on, blinking about every second. The PS3 GUI will say that the controller is charging, but I doubt this. Once I unplug the PS3 controller, its connection with the PS3 is terminated and the LEDs start to toggle between on/off every 0.7 seconds or so.

I left the controller alone plugged into the PS3 (turned on) to charge and once the controller turned off due to inactivity, pressing the PS button did not reestablish connection with the PS3. The only way to reestablish the connection was to unplug the controller and plug it back in.

For all intents and purposes, my controller has become a wired controller that stops working after inactivity and needs to be replugged.

Anyone get this problem before? I'm wondering what I should do. :(

After browsing the official Sony boards, here is how i got mine back again tonite. Supposedly this works everytime until Sony fixes the issue...

My PS3 is a Slim, but i doubt that it matters...

With system in standby mode:

1)Connect USB cable to controller, and connect other end to PS3
2)Turn on PS3 using the power button on the system

WAIT UNTIL PS3 IS BOOTED ALL THE WAY INTO XMB

3)Hit PS button on controller to turn it on
4)Log into XMB and wait for all the icons, etc...to load
5)Unplug cable from controller, and it should be fine.

This worked perfect for me tonite...for those of you with issues, give it a shot.

A buddy of mine had the same issue. It has not repeated so as much as it sucks, it shouldn't be something you have a problem with regularly.

Thanks for the replies!

kent, I'd rather do some tinkering and see if I can fix it before that.

Azureth, I don't get what you mean for step 4... I have to turn the PS3 off and back on or something?

Wheresatom, what did he do to fix it in the first place?

EDIT:
I went to check what the warranty period was (1 year) and then saw that I ordered this thing on 11/15/2008. Haha. Perfect.

Alright I opened up the controller, unplugged and replugged the battery, and now the controller works normally! :D

I've been having similar issues with my ps3 slim recently as well. Does this have anything to do with the recent firmware update? I can't think of anything else that could have caused it. Is Sony aware of the problem?

I've been having the on and off problem of being able to the turn the system on with the PS button but the controller never connects to the system. So I have to turn off the system while the lights are still blinking on the controller and then turn it back on again and it finally finds the damn thing. And this started with the last update. Weird and annoying when it happens.

There's a little button on the back of the controller, press it to restart the controller. Mine was acting up the other day just reset it and the PS3 and it should sync.
