So the big news on the PS3 the other day was that the PAL version of the PS3 would have limited backwards compatibility. Sony’s Phil Harrison has clarified that a bit and said that over 1,000 PS2 titles would be backwards compatible through software emulation.

"What has previously gone into PS3s on sale elsewhere in the world was a custom component, which we have now removed." Harrison won't be drawn on precise details of which PS2 games will be playable on the PS3 at launch, but says: "We expect the list to encompass over 1,000 PlayStation 2 titles." So, will Sony concentrate on making the big PS2 titles - the Grand Theft Autos, Gods of War and Gran Turismos - compatible with the PS3? "I can't give information on individual titles, but clearly, that would be our aim."

So how long untill they have that 1000 game number drop to like 150 or something for launch?

Anyway backwards compatibilty is a nice feature but with this I'm thinking they are going to get nothing but issues. If anything why not just remove it all of the way on the 20 gig version and make it only for the 60 or something.

Hmmm...so is having software emulation for old PS2 games such a bad thing? From what I gather they will be able to upscale resolutions, do antialising, etc. that they otherwise would not be able to do with the hardware version? Dunno, I have not been a fan of Sony for quite sometime, but this seems like a non issue to me. But, than again I could be completely wrong and this news does indeed suck. :p

Ok, so I'm confused. The non-PAL version of the PS3 was or was not backwards compatible? And now its going to be 'limited'?

That 1,000 number sounds big, until you account for the fact there are 10,000 titles for the PS2.

Essentially, that means in 1in10 games iwll work on the PS3. They call that good emulation? Thats ****.

Mind you, if they focus on making all of th emajor games work they might get let off the hook, but thats a miserly %.

I think the idea menitoned above about making hardware b/c only for the 60gb is a better idea imo.

I saw another site use 10,000, but Sony's website is showing 8,571 titles at the end of 2006. Either way 1,000 titles is pathetic once you know how many game titles there actually are.

Well, figure that by working on those 1000 games, another 1000 might work because the main problems are taken care of.
