Holy crap I just got a PS3 today and decided it would go into my array of folders too. I am looking at it and it amazes me its a folding beast. SO much faster than my computer I am just blown away...
 
It is the fastest folder behind the GPU client. And you shouldn't need to worry about the longevity, I personally have ~1100 WUs on my PS3 (but now it is retired due to the cost of electricity where I live)

The old generation will consume about 200w while folding. The new generation (40Gb and probably the 80Gb) have some tweaks to cut consumption to 130-140w.

 
I haven't checked my PS3 lately, but it has been folding 24/7 since Xmas except
for probably 50-100 hours? of gaming or BlueRay movie watching. I've got the 40G
model with a 160G drive replacement to store photos, etc. Folds like a charm.

sounds really poor considering they are running on a Cell Processor that has like 8 cores if i'm not mistaken

Yes, but I think one is disabled and one is reserved for the OS. In any case, aren't there some recent WUs that produce over 1000PPD?

They're also not true cores, it's basically one core with 7 SPEs that are good at some instructions and not so good at others. Also points aren't the true measure of how much actual work is being done. 53,291 active PS3s are putting out 1503 TFLOPS compared to 197,763 active Windows PCs putting out 188 TFLOPS.

I'm not sure if the points are they way they are due to the specialized nature of the work units or if they didn't want to piss the loyal PC folders off by leaving them in the dust.

The firmer IcedEmotion. They only have so many WU's for them and they still need a lot of work only a CPU can do. We have to all work together with whatever we have. Thankfully, I''m getting my PS3 going tomorrow :D I would have already done it, but it doesn't seem to want to connect to the internet even though it connects to the router with no problem. If anyone has any ideas, I'm VERY happy to hear them. Either way I'm going to work on it tomorrow.

I'd venture a guess it may be a blocked port.

Easy thing to do is just DMZ your PS3. I haven't read about anyone having any security issues with their PS3 in DMZ mode.
 
I think its more than 900PpD since I only left it on for 12hrs yesterday and I jumped up about 1500pts, that is of course with my computer but I am sure that It can do more than 1000PpD.

You'll have to wait and see over a couple days to get a good average, but its closer to about 960PPD. Someone over at OCF (I think) ran one for a week under its own username for a week to get a good estimate.
 
Thanks Parja. That sounds like a good solution if that is the problem. It looks like it gets an IP address from the wireless AP, but it doesn't connect to the Internet after that. I have never set up a DMZ before. Will I have to set each computer up or just the PS3?
 
I just got it working. Basically I just power cycled the PS3 by the hardware switch instead of just with the controller. That did the trick. It's updating now and then I'll get the F@H software downloaded and going tonight. Thanks everyone!--The Cheese...
