PS2 + Widescreen Woes

Alright, this is really irking me now. The setup is a Gateway FPD2185W monitor (16:10 widescreen), and a PS2/GC hooked up to it via Component cables.

The problem is...well, I'm not sure if all the settings are right. The PS2 is set to 16:9, the game (in this case, I picked one that has a 4:3/16:9 option, like Ace Combat 4, Gran Turismo 4). The monitor was set to 1:1 scaling...this results in still, a 4:3 image in the middle of the screen, everything bleh. Setting the monitor to 'Wide' video scaling (with the PS2 set to 16:9) makes 16:9 games look correct (well, I guess at least all the circles are in fact, circles...), but AFAIK, 16:9 on a 16:10 monitor should still fill the screen horizontally with bars on the top/bottom (1.78/1.85:1 or whatever it is). 4:3 games look fine @ 1:1 scaling, but are stretched at 'Wide', logically I guessed. (Like Rogue Galaxy).

Anyone with this setup/similar (using a Dell/Viewsonic/etc) chime in please? Not sure what's going on. :(

EDIT: Oh! SCPH-30001, V4 Fat PS2, and a vanilla GC w/ the digital A/V out in use here.

on my dell 2005fpw i set it to fill and it looks good to me no matter if its 4:3 or 16:9... maybe the dell's have a better scaler? i know its a faroudja... is that the scaler or decoder?

Gateway uses the Faroudja DCDi to reduce the combing introduced by nature of displaying interlaced images on a natively progressive screen.

C'mon, HDTV owners chime in too!

480i and 480p are 4:3 resolutions. So if you are using 1:1 scaling, you will always get a 4:3 image.

The way you get 16:9 is to stretch the image. Your system is set up correctly.

Hmmkay. So take a 480i game like Ace Combat 4, set it to 16:9, and set the monitor to 'Wide'. Should that fill up the entire screen with bar on top and bottom, or with tiny bars on the side? Because I end up with full top to bottom, but small bars on the side. :( Circles are circles though.

I get the same thing with my Samsung LNS3251 HDTV. Playing Final Fantasy 12 gives me full top to bottom, but tiny little bars on the sides.. I don't get it but oh well.

You're going to get bars on the side/top/bottom in most games because they are designed with older CRT televisions in mind. The image is smaller than the screen because on most CRTs this area is pushed beyond the visible edge of the set (overscanned) and will never be seen. However since most modern digital displays don't overscan the image you are left with a black border on the edges.

The size of the bars will vary from game to game as well since this is all controlled by the developer/programmer.

The PS2 always feeds at 4:3. Any changes by the game will not affect the output's "physical" aspect ratio - it'll just start feeding squashed video into that 4:3 frame. If you want 16:9 on your monitor, you've got to manually select it as the over-ride (as you did).

The "bars at the sides" thing is weird, though. I'll see if my HDTV has that issue with Guitar Hero II tonight.
