PS2 Recommendations??

How come nobody mentioned Metal Gear Solid 3?
Because it sucked?

I kid I kid! Well, I don't actually. I hated it but thats me, anyways...

I would say wait for the subsistance version of that, if you plan to play it at all. They supposedly tweaked the game to fix some of the major complaints about it, as well as adding all the usual subsistance add-ins. Edit: Apparently they are breaking the mold with this one. They are including On-line play with co-op modes, and the original MSX computer Metal Gear titles not ever available anywhere but via emulation or in Japan. Then there are the tweaks to game play that I want. Sounds awesome, I may recant my stance on this title.

The Burnout series is a video game version of what kids do with hot wheels tracks. Line the cars up and see what kind of spectacular crashes you can achieve. Theres racing, a knockout mode where you destroy the other cars racing against you, and the destruction mode. The last is my favorite, you run your car at high speed into heavy traffic to see what kind of pileup you can create.

Get the multiplatform games on your Gamecube (i.e. RE4, Viewtiful Joes, Tales of Symphonia, Beyond Good And Evil, Timesplitters 3, etc) as they most definately play and look better there. Katamari titles are always great choices, Slarti!

Get the PS2 for the great exclusives, since its ports are usually inferior.
These exclusives, that you haven't already bought, include:
Castlevania: SOTN (definately a good prequel to your awesome DS game)
J-RPGs (Dragon Quest, FF, Xenosaga, Tales that aren't on the Cube) if you like those
Gran Turismo 4 if you like racing sim (you don't) so get Burnout: Revenge
Kingdon Hearts is good, Shadow of the Colossus is great but short (Ico is decent)
God of War if you like action and breasts, decent title
Don't bother with GTA: SA - crap IMO, but if you like it, at least get it for PC
In fact, don't bother with the shooting games, get the PS2 for the more original stuff.

I'm skeptical about dq8 because what I'm sick of in RPG's is the gamplay. I'm tired of the turn-based, press the button, watch your guys attack sort of thing. I tried to play chrono cross over the summer (never played it before but loved chrono trigger) and I just couldn't do it. I mean the battle system was pretty cool with the colors and stuff, but I dunno, that sort of game just doesn't do it for me anymore. I may check out Gradius V because I do have a penchant for shooters.

What, no more arcade stick recommendations??

If you don't like turn-based RPG's.. I recommend Kingdom Hearts or the, just heard of this, Tales of Symphonia.

Steviep:

Actually I don't own a gamecube, I moved out of my parents house in may of this year, but my younger brother and my friends down the street both had gamecubes, so I've played a lot of GC. Now I'm a few hundred miles away from them so I don't really play it anymore :)

Einhander:

I had that game but sold it. You are right, it's an excellent shooter, but once I got Ikaruga I stopped playing it. Besides, when I moved out I wasn't sure if there would be room for my PS1, so I sold a bunch of PS1 games to buy Dreamcast stuff. Einhander was a lot of fun, but too long for a shooter IMO.

Shadow Of The Colossus: Have it, love it :)

The Metal Gear Solid and GTA games are def. on my radar, I'll probably pick up cheap versions and see if I like 'em.

Beyond Good And Evil:

I have this on my PC but I haven't gotten more than an hour or two into it. I do enjoy it, but it just seems to control horribly with a keyboard/mouse, so I haven't decided if I want to try to get a PC gamepad and play it, or just get it for $20 on the PS2.

Keep 'em coming!

:O Get a Gamecube back! lol
Seriously, though, don't skip out on Castlevania if you like the DS version. And get yourself a gamepad for PC - BG&E looks better on the PC, but does need a gamepad.

Out of curiosity I went to Gamespot to see what the highest rated PS2 game of all time was (10/10). I dont recall it being mentioned here but, "Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3" is an awesome game.

I might catch some flak for that, but I stand behind Gamespots review. :p

Well, I am def. getting a rev. so I figure after that I'll pick up some GC games and controllers :)

Speaking of PC gamepads, any recommendations for those? It seems like they're all crap. That one logitech pad that was modeled on a dual shock seemed ok, maybe if the X360 USB pads come down in price I'll get one.

Also:

No more arcade stick recommendations?? Come on guys somebody else has to own one!

As for Tony Hawk: thanks but no, don't really enjoy them.

Tony Hawk are fun games, but you definately have to like it to appreciate it.

Slarti, if you like the dualshock pads on the PS2, get yourself 2 of the logitech pads modelled after them (they work just fine, and are cheap. I got 2 of them for $30 canadian). Don't bother with the X360 controller since it has some compatibility issues (especially with the force feedback) and it's quite expensive still.

Are you really going to want to BUY Gamecube titles after seeing what the Rev can do? :p
I would still go along with the Kingdom Hearts and Tales of Symphonia recommendations.

Yeah, my friends and I have put about one month's worth of gametime in smash bro's melee, and one of them has moved to boston as well and we miss playing it. Also if twilight princess happens to end up on gc that's a good reason, as well as mario kart DD with my gf (we played it at BB for like an hour one day). I also want the GC version of Ikaruga because it runs faster than the DC version (like literally, everything moves faster so it's harder). Besides they should all be pretty cheap after Rev comes out.

Those logitech pads are about $20 US so that's a pretty good deal you got.

I'm not enthused about Kingdom Hearts either; I've seen a fair amount of it and I don't know that I could get past the whole Disney thing. I remember reading about Tales Of Symphonia and thinking it looked cool, though.

I would reccomend just puchasing a USB adapter for your PC to use the Dual Shock 2 with. It should be less than any standalone gamepad.

I've been wondering about that but how good is the driver support? To play BG&E effectively I'm going to need both thumbsticks

Those things apparently do work (I have them for my Gamecube pads)... HOWEVER, I would still go with the Logitech pads, as they are built for PC and should have 100% compatibility. Look around for deals on them, though, don't pay $20. When they go on sale here, they are $20 Canadian for the WIRELESS versions of them! Visit some local computer stores or something. Hell, I can get them "refurbished" as a boxing week deal from a local computer store for $2.99 each.

You're going to miss that Gamecube. I know if I only had my PS2, I would miss a lot of those exclusive games :p Tales of Symphonia is excellent, btw. Grab that - the PS2 version has more media in it, but doesn't quite look/run as well - still the same game, though!

Well I've been 7 months without and no serious longings yet :) I still have a few dreamcast games to get, anyway...

As for the wireless logitech pads, I've heard a lot of bad things about them - seems the wireless receiver goes bad pretty fast. I've been watching the regular pads for a while and never seen 'em below $20 US unfortunately.

Heh, I have very fond memories of Tony hawk.... parties back in HS with the original PS1 version... too much SoCo.... someone deciding that 'strip Tony Hawk' (where each round everyone does that mode where you try to get the highest trick score on a short course) is a good idea, and everyone else agreeing.... ah.... mmm, sorry, got my mind back now.

Just curious, why did you hate it? I haven't liked any of the PS1/PS2 Metal Gear games (the 3D ones... the 2D ones I liked), just because the controls are awful, I can't stand games that make you use both analog sticks just to move. What did it in for you?

Lamont said:
You don't need both sticks to move in any MGS game.

MGS or MGS2 required it (I can't remember which one, I think I tried both...) but I definately remember having to use both analog sticks to move/target.... or maybe it had that dumbass early Resident Evil Style config... It has been a few years.

No, it's rare you'd need to use the right stick. You can choose to not use the sticks, but Snake will always run.

MGS 1/VR Missions: Right stick is not used.
MGS2: Right stick is used to change view when in corner mode.
MGS3: Same as above but with "Lock" feature when R3 is pressed.

Honestly, two was good, but I lost interest in it halfway through the raiden part. The whole not playing as snake thing sorta did me in.

With three it was something about the camera and the controls. In all fairness, it was a rental, and I didn't get an instruction book, which rendered my ability to use CQC null and void. Not knowing about that feature, and the guards just pissed me off. I really thought the hiding/camo feature was a cool idea, but poorly implemented

I do plan on giving Subsistance a rent, WITH an instruction book.

I have a buttload of games

Umm. I usually keep about five at a time, then sell or give away. Am I retentive or are you a serious collector?

I like to collect them, I've been spending more time getting rare/obscure games than new ones. I did have to get rid of the Atari collection though, it was difficult. But I needed the space.

I think for the PS2 there's tons of little games that are under the radar of gamers. Technic is one of them, uhmmm, the first Ico is another. Hard to find now. The cover of that game sucked really bad. Silpheed is another. Kinda easy though. Mad Maestro. Amplitude... dang there's more.. kinda slipping the tounge right now.

If you ever mod your PS2, there are some crazy Japanese games out there:

Rimokokoronn
Some typing games (Gundam, Evangelion and a Bushido one...) too.

I agree. I keep my copy of Rez and I still hold on to WipeOutXL so I guess I'm a jerk.

I've been hunting eBay for it...

After that, I think there's another 20 games or so and my PS2 "wanted" collection will be up to date. Then on to XBox...

Oh!! And don't forget the Mega Man X collection coming out!!

Nah.. i love the cordless action pro.. its probably the best controller ive ever played with.. it failed me once but it fixed itself one day

Huh. Last time I looked at it on newegg it had like a 1 star rating, now it has 5...

The first time i played with it was at E3 2004 on the FF12 demo. Ive never turned back since.. just head over to bestbuy... they have them on their ps2 demo stands.

I had the Logitec controller and ended up giving it to my kid to chew on. The sticks are too loose for my tastes.

Shadow of the Collossus is one of the best games i've played in a while. It's the best game i've played all year. Across all platforms.

Has anyone here played Rez? I've heard it's really cool but it's a tad expensive on ebay. My impression is that it was one of those games that didn't receive great reviews but was a bit of a cult classic.

Rez is nice, it's one of the games I am hunting down on Ebay... I may have to raid the cabinet at work and see if it's there.

From some eBay guy:
This Sega / UGA developed classic has become one of the PS2 must-haves (and is far, far superior to over-rated fodder such as Ico, in my opinion).

Oh!! Check out Killzone and PsiOps.

Has anyone here played Rez? I've heard it's really cool but it's a tad expensive on ebay. My impression is that it was one of those games that didn't receive great reviews but was a bit of a cult classic.
I just ordered the Japanese version for $25.

On Rez: I'd recommend it if you like house music. It's fun to play with. If you've ever tried Lumines then you'd have sort of an idea, because it's one of those "total" experiances. The core gameplay isn't really all that great, it's almost like the old rail shooters. But it's the music and the synch'd up graphics that does it.

Plus, if you have ever, ever, tripped balls, it is sure to trigger a flashback. So I've read, at least. $25 bucks is a steal. Did you get the "vibrator" with the Japanese version?

It seems like we pretty much have the same tastes in games and are at similar stages of life/gaming (with regards to RPG's and such). Your list in your initial post is pretty solid.

Katamari Damacy 1 & 2 are worth the price of admission alone.
Ico and Colossus are also musts
God of War
Guitar Hero is pretty cool if it is your cup of tea.
Viewtiful Joe
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 & 2
Champions of Norrath

-- Now for the off the wall suggestions --
Ape Escape games
Mr. Mosquito - strange but fun
Wakeboarding Unleashed Featuring Shaun Murray - amazingly one of the best mixes of game and music ever. A great game even if you have no interest in wakeboarding.
Magic Pengel: The Quest for Color
Frequency
Tokyo Racer Zero
Virtua Fighter 4 - top fighter, especially if you are a fighting fan... or even if not.
Rez
Sky Odyssey
Taiko Drummer
Eye Toy

^^Thanks for the suggestions Bruenor, I've never heard of some of those, will definitely be looking into them :)
