PS2 over component problems

I just purchased a PS2 component cable and used it to hook up my slim PS2 to my Westinghouse L2410NM. I set it up in the configuration screen and everything looked great with FF12, but when I put in a PSX game (FF Anthology) the game wouldn't load. Is this a problem with PSX games or did I get a bum cable???? Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Yes, all the games load properly with the regular composite cables.

I also tried FF Origins with the same results, works fine over composite but no go over component.

I have a feeling that this is just the way it is, but I was hoping someone using their PS2 over component might be able to let me know if they experienced the same thing.

PS1 games, when played on a PS2 using component output, are known to have issues. Indeed, I've run into exactly the issue you're talking about. S-video might work better, if you have access to that and don't absolutely need progressive scan support.

I have FF Anthology and FF Origins and they both ran fine on my original PS2 with component.

Could the issue be isolated to the slim PS2?

It might be worth mentioning that I'm using generic PS2 component cables I bought off ebay. I dunno if that would cause the video to work for some games and not others? Seems like I might just have to deal with composite for all my PSX games. Thanks for your replies everyone.

There is an option int he PS2 to enable component video, isn't there? Did you set it?

I'm thinking back to my experience with the PS2, and I didn't really play too many PSX games on it. However, I never had a problem, and I know I played some games, including some final fantasy games. I do remember that when I got my component cable I had to "turn it on".

Being a generic cable wouldn't cause this. Component Video doesn't support any type of secure protocol like HDMI does. If the cable were bad, you'd get a crappy or no picture on all video, not just PSX games.

I did enable component and I am able to play PS2 games without issue.

That's what I figured, I guess I'll be sticking with composite, thanks for your help.

I've been able to play Anthology and Origins over component on a slimline ps2 no problems. Only other PS1 game I have is the original MGS, will give it a shot tonight to test.

Check the PS2 settings menu (boot it up with no game in the drive). There's an option to switch between RGB and YPbPr output over component. Try both, and report back.

When i switch to RGB I get no picture at all, absolutely nothing. When I switch back to YPbPr I get the issue of PSX games not booting properly. I'll try a few more things and report back.

I tried every single PSX game I own and none worked properly. With FF8 I got to the opening credits but when I pressed start to go to New Game/Continue I got a blue screen, no sound, and nothing further. Tried some more PS2 games and they all work perfectly. I guess I'm just out of luck on this.

Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.
