PS2 - Adding a Hard Drive

I want to put a HDD in my PS2 (thick style) to run HDAdvance since the optical drive is starting to go.

Do I need anything else besides the network/HDD adapter and an IDE drive? Do I actually need the HDD tray or is it possible to fab something up?
 
You don't need the tray. However, remember that not all drives are compatible - in particular, a lot of WD drives don't physically plug into the adapter.

I ran into that myself. However, taking off the i/o shield and snipping it with a nibbler or tin snips helps. The connections have some play or you can have them "loose" which is what I ended up doing. I was able to put a WD 80gig in mine back when I still had it.

Being as you can get those adapters super cheap at Gamestop/etc, try mangling one if you have a drive that doesn't fit so well. I never had any issues with mine.

If this is true, and you're talking about the ones that plug into the fat PS2's, I would really really LOVE to arrange something with someone to pick one up for me and ship it over here. I'll directly deposit the money into your bank account (no pay pal, don't intend to either).

Yeah the fat ps2's, not the slimline. I'll have to check on costs/availability, since we don't have one here in town.

I did that with a WD drive as well.

Also, I thought there was a version of HD Advance that worked with the slim PS2's via a USB drive?

It works with fat PS2s as well, IIRC. However, I would envision some loading speed issues with this approach - remember that the PS2 is only packing USB 1.1, which is a whopping 12mbit/s (eg, a megabyte a second, if you're lucky).
 
Well none of my local Gamestops had any instock, but I ordered one off ebay and it came in today. I had a old 60GB IBM deathstar that plugged right in.

Now, I assume HDAdvance 3 is the best software to go with?
 
Another quickie..

Does the network adapter kill power to the drive if it's not being used or something?

I've tried 3 drives, with no CD in the drive, they power up, stay on for a second and spin back down..
