ps/2 to usb?

i was wondering if theres any way to convert a ps/2 mouse or keyboard to usb by splicing the wires on an old usb plug?

no. theres far more to usb than the connector. You will need an actual converter box that talks the usb protocol.

A lot of KVM switches can do this.
Some can even talk the old Mac or Sun keyboard & mouse protocols, though they've both switched to USB now.

edit: On that note, I should probably buy one at some point so I can keep using my IBM model M once PS/2 ports go away.

some mice and keyboards come with a ps/2 to USB adapter, but I have found that not all USB keyboards and mice work with them. Only the keyboards and mice that came with the adapters work and all other ones arent recognized. So, you'll probably have to go the converter box route, although I'm not aware of any.

PS/2 and USB are different protocols, not just different connectors, so you can't just do a pin to pin conversion. You can't put diesel in a gasoline engine just because they are both liquids. There have been many many ps2 -> usb converters since usb was first introduced. You don't need a kvm. Just make sure the converter is actually a converter and not just an adapter.

Yeah, they sell these for laptops and its pretty cheap. I think most people are confusing female USB to Male PS/2 as opposed to what i think you need (Female PS/2 to Male USB), correct?
