I was in Wal-mart and saw one of these switches. Control two computers with one mouse/keyboard/monitor. How well do these things work and do they allow you to have both computers ON and switch between working with them.

Some work really well. Some don't. You get what you pay for. BTW, avoid Belkin. I have one (Omni-View SE 4-port) and the mouse only works with buttons, no scrolling or anything.

There are two types of KVM switches in this world. The first kind is just a simple switch. When you switch from computer to computer, it's as if you're unplugging the 3 devices from one computer and plugging them into the other. This presents a problem, especially with PS/2 mice and keyboards, since unplugging a PS/2 mouse and keyboard from a computer while it's powered on will usually prevent them from working if you plug them back in again.

The other kind is the one that emulates the presence of a keyboard and mouse, even when you're switched to the other computer. These are the KVMs to get, but they're a little more expensive (and with good reason). Just keep this in mind when looking at those things.

will an MX700 work with a KVM switch? or does the wireless aspect of the mouse present a problem?

Can anyone recommend a good one $50-$75. The one I saw at walmart is this one
iogear MiniView Micro KVM Switch Features:

Use one keyboard, monitor and mouse to control two computers
6-foot long molded-in cables to simplify setup
Small size for easy installation
PS/2 mouse emulation for error-free boot-up
Plug-n-Play monitor support
MiniView switches support video resolutions up to 1920 x 1440
No software required

It is only $24..so I wondering how well it works.
