Propus now on Newegg

Seems like they are solid chips. My next family PC is going to be build off of these.

Yeah I was surprised too it didnt do a little better in games. I was also surprised to see how good the P2 550 does gaming! Not bad for a $100 CPU! I cant wait to get my hands on one of these.

I may get one of these... I've been wanting to build an AMD system for a while now just to mess with.

hahahaha newegg reviews.

Love that the two guys piling on the other guy are both wrong.

OP did you not see the 4 page thread that already covers this subject?

Yes I did, have mostly read the entire thing. I was posting it up as I have not seen them for sale anywhere, this was the first I had seen them pop up.

i can make this thread more useful.

Since there is the 600e about to come to newegg soon (2 weeks give or take we hope) and that looks to be the new sweet spot cpu for general performace/watt/price, what will or is the best video card to match? just like the cpu, something that has good horsepower for not a lot of wattage. of course, something better then onboard...

Well the 550 has 500 Mhz and 6 MB of L3 cache advantage over the x4 620.

Minus 2 cores... not even touching the unlock aspect. I love the 550, reminds me of those glorious celeron 366s days. Damn that was a long time ago.

A reviewer said the 6MB L3 can be unlocked in the same fashion the 4th core is unlocked on those triple cores.

That is only on the deneb cores Athlon II X4.

AMD pulled those chips out early replacing them with true Athlon II X4 that has no L3 cache. So the chances of getting unlockable L3 cache is slim.

So what are the benefits of having the L3 in the new Propus cores vs. one or two less cores with the deneb core? As I understand it the X3 720 and X2 550 BEs have the ability to be unlocked (fairly successfully) but one or two of the cores could be bad, thus you are stuck with a Dual or Triple Core processor. With this, would the benefit of having all 4 cores at $100 be more worthwhile than a faster, possibly unlockable process.

So really they are a few hundred mhz faster than their Propus brethren then? So if my math is right, if you had a 2.6ghz Deneb, the Propus counterpart would be roughly 2.3ghz? Saying that Deneb with full L3 cache is 5% faster.

no, the clock speed is still gonna be whatever its listed as, but clock-per-clock performance. will be roughly 5% slower. Also, I think ur math might be a bit off... 95% of 2.6GhZ is 2.47GhZ. So a 2.6GhZ propus would *theoretically feel* like a 2.47GhZ deneb. You put the two together in systems with otherwise the same hardware and tell me you can notice the difference, though.

That is what I was trying to get at. Basically, with a few hundred mhz difference you are not going to feel that difference of available L3 cache. Here is my main reason behind this discussion, I am no longer a hardcore pc gamer. I have switched to console and feel that while there are some games that can be played on PC (mostly mmo's) that I will be doing 95% of my gaming on the consoles. With that said, I would still like the ABILITY for the system to do the gaming, as well as graphics editing, movie ripping and the normal everyday stuff. With what I see in these new Athlon II X4 chips this is a good budget system buster for such people as me.:D
