Proposed CAD rig...

1) I paid less for 2 gigs of reg+ecc ram for my dual operon. You could easially save a few $ by going 4x512

2) Why an 80gb drive and a 200gb drive? for over 100$ less you can get a single 250gb drive. If its because you want to have a seperate drive for storage, and a drive for os and programs I'd suggest you spend a bit more and pick up a raptor. If your client is moveing enough data around to auctually use 2gb ram the raptor would help preformance alot.

3) For about 50$ less you could grab a powercolor 9800pro.

Also, think about if you really want to provide a co-worker with a computer wiht hardware you have modified (the 9800 to GL series mod). The vid card will no longer have a warrenty and if stuff dosnt go right your in the hot seat.
 
Not gonna mod the card. The articles were just posted as proof that the pro level cards are essentially the same as concumer level cards, and that the FireGL is not really required for the programs snd the pro cards are mostly about program specific driver support. Nowadays the basic drivers work well enough, unless you're in a mission critical application.

Maybe I will go with the 4X512, good idea.

What CADD program is he planning on using and does he intend to do a lot of 3D modeling with it? I run ACAD 04 on a P3 600 laptop with 128mb of memory. It runs fine for 2d and minor 3D. On my main rig, I can do some pretty detailed 3D modeling with 1 gig.

My main rig:
Abit NF7-S @ 210 FSB
Barton 2500+ @ 2.3 gigs
Radeon 9800 Pro
1 gig PC3200

This system is watercooled as well, but I have not had any problems with fully rendered, detailed 3D models.
 
He's *cough* obtained *cough* a copy of CATIA V5, and his old job used CATIA V5 in the workplace. His new job doesn't use it, but he wants to remain up to speed with it so he's going to do stuff at home on it to keep the skills fresh.

And powercolor is not a name brand?
I still also think the raptor would outpreform your 2x80gigs in a raid 0 and would have better data security. The raptors seek time is litterally under half of those 80's.
 
If you go read those requirements, they're pretty damn sketchy! I already visited those pages.

Though they do list http://www.catia.com/your_catia/html/hwnt2.htm a bunch of "certified" configurations, and none are standard desktop cards. OK OK, going back to the drawing board....
