Proper TIM Application for i7-2600k

I'm getting some uneven cooling on an i7-2600k. At load, core 0 will be 60c while core 3 can jump as high as 68c.

So, what is the proper way to apply TIM to the chip's heatspreader? I've been doing the pea-in-the-center approach. Also, will AS5 work better than Cooler Master's included TIM?
 
If you look a the coretemp/realtemp screenshots in the numerous threads, you'll see that cores #2 and #3 in these processors tend to run hotter than 1 and 4. Mine have about a 6-8* difference between the highs and lows. Seems fairly standard for SB.
 
I'm guessing this may be related to how the on die GPU is disabled, so one side will be more cool then the other.

It would be no different than any previous CPU.

Use the good old credit card and thin layer IMO, you can never go wrong with this process.
 
TIM coverage is not going to affect individual core temps - that difference is something inherent in the design of the chip. I've seen my split be as high as 11C in some circumstances.
 
My Q6600 does this also. I have checked the TIM contact so many times but core 1 still sees 3-4*C difference in temps compared to the other cores, even after being lapped perfectly smooth.

Under full load, core 1 and 2 can be as much as 7*C hotter than core 3 and 4. I think it is something to do with the design of the chip as well :(
 
I don't honestly thing the differential in temp between the cores is that big of a deal. If you are on the bleeding edge of whatever temp you are comfortable, it's either time to knock down the volts or bump up your cooling solution.
 
If your concerned with coverage, put a dab of TIM on the CPU, place your cooler, remove it and check the coverage. If it's good, replace it and tighten down. If its not good, make adjsutments. No one says you can't take it off to check the spread.
As an aside, the CPU's are not super flat from the plant, and neither is the cooler in most circumstances, so you will not likely have perfectly symmetrical cooling, and it seems that most people get about a 4-8 degree differential across the cores (at least thats what I've seen).
 
I used the line method with good results. For my P8T67 Pro board with the pcie slots closest to me and the backpanel to the left, the line of paste was vertical. You can of course tell the proper orientation from looking at the socket or back of the processor.

The processor die is almost twice as long as it is wide, so I figured the line method would be best.
