Proper rack cabling

My situation is that I've got a 2 post relay rack sitting next to a Dell cabinet. The relay rack has 3 patch panels in it, the cabinet has numerous servers, a couple of switches, router, and so forth. Is there really a proper way cable the patch panels to the switches? Right now there is just a mess of cables coming out of the top of the relay rack and draped into two of the holes on top of the cabinet. (No raised floor). I wouldn't mind cleaning this up somewhat, my predecessor left a fairly big mess.

Any tips, tricks, comments, or suggestions are welcome!

You could try and get some simple cables guides, something to help support them. Also, color coding and tagging will help alot, that way you can track down cables easily. Check the networking gallery, Pluslabs has a gallery setup, which you might get some ideas from.

There is vertical cable management you can bolt to the the side of the 2-post rack.

Then use some horizontal cable management to deliver the cable from the vertical out to your switches and such.

I've got the vertical cable management parts already. As for horizontal, I imagine this is probably something I could just hang from the ceiling... maybe bolted into the cement above the tile or something.

Any suggestions there?

Check out Panduit's website - I use A LOT of their wire management gear - all of which kicks ass.

Looks like Panduit's stuff comes in more handy when it comes to managing cables in the rack itself. What about some sort of suspended cable rack of some sort? I wouldn't even really know wher eto start looking for something like that...

Any pics of the current setup and we can do some more recommendations that way

Also and after pic?

All about the network pr0n ;-)

you need a short piece of ladder rack above the 2 racks. They make brackets that will attach the ladder rack to the top of the 2 post rack, and im sure you could rig something to the cabinet. That way you dont have the trouble or expense of trying to hang it.

We usually use B-line ladder rack and fittings

Here is our 2 post rack at work. Its got panduit cable managers on it.

Forgive the image quality, I took the pic with my cell phone.

You'll see the punchdown blocks at the top, and the switches below them. The majority of the cable is stuffed into the vertical black manager on the left of the rack.

Please, let those cables be labeled on both ends

What are they demonstrating? I love extreme gear, you can always tell by the purple. Cisco should switch to some unique color to stand out as much.

Best guess, the white boxes are traffic genorators, and they are showing how much traffic that switch can handle without slowdown/hickups.

Yea, Cisco does seem a little bland in a rack with other things. If i was a network admin id be with Sun system, just for the purple :D

Yea, they're that boring green. They need to liven' things up a little with a better green or something.

Yea, Ciscos color is that dark green, and it doesn't stand out, but then again it looks a bit more profesional that way.
