proper ATI driver install, help please!

So, I have a 6950 2GB etc.

I've been running 11.12 for a longggg time without issue (multi-display, multi-audio etc).

Based on my research, 12.8 is the best current driver for my 6950.

Question is, should i uninstall 11.12 via the control panel, reboot, run driver sweeper in safe mode, reboot and then install 12.8.

Or, is it safe these days to uninstall 11.12 via the control panel, reboot, and install 12.8 etc? (if I use this method will it save my ATI preferences? Which would be great etc)

I'm only asking because I'm very careful with driver updates and I don't wanna run into any BS etc.

That's what I do. The only couple times I've actually run into trouble in the increasingly distant past is when I've run 3rd party driver cleaners/sweepers. I'd probably skip them unless you're troubleshooting a specific issue. There's a somewhat new official AMD uninstall utility out there too, but I've never tried it.

Ok, I uninstalled 11.12 within the control panel and rebooted, installed 12.8 etc. (via the basic method without sweeper/ati uninstall)

The only problem I ran into was configuring dual audio for the speakers and hdmi audio to the TV. (which I eventually figured out)

All in all, its good. I gained 7fps in Firefall etc.
