I have recently acquired a Promise EX8350 RAID card and installed it in my GA-ep45-ds5 mobo running WHS as a means to support a further 8 disks (4 x Samsung 1.5TB; 4 x Samsung 1TB). The card is sitting in the second Gigabyte pci-e x 16 slot (runs x8). I'm using JBOD and the disks show up OK in the BIOS load.
Everything appears to be working fine BUT i can only access disks at speeds typically 5MB/sec. Ocassionally it jumps to 10MB/sec but no more. The same speed limitation happens with PerfectDisk.
It has taken nearly 3 days to remove a 'faulty' 1TB samsung disk (smart field184 has been set). It's still running so my ability to do much analysis at this stage is limited.
The strange thing is when I use Lsoft active disk monitor to do a disk scan it hits speeds of 100MB/sec which is what I was expecting.
I have since loaded the promise webparm utility and found I could get the write speeds I was expecting by setting the write cache switch. Now getting 50MB/sec per disk.
So, yes the Promise ex8350 works on Gigabyte motherboards using ACH10 southbridge with Samsung 1TB and 1.5TB drives in a JBOD configuration using WHS.
