Promedia replacement driver?

I have a set of Klipsch Promedia 2.1's, and recently the 3" driver in the left satellite crapped out on me. My options seem to be at this point to either order an entire new satellite from klipsch when (if it ever) comes back in stock, or try my luck with craigslist or ebay for a new set. Does anyone know if I can just get a pair of aftermarket drivers instead and throw them in there? All I care about is that they sound as good or better as the stock, and don't cost much more than $30.

actually if the control pod is detachable from the right sat, it's probably better to upgrade the satellites if you want to.

Thanks, the drivers he used are pretty much what seems to be the standard replacement, and I ordered a pair. I know changing the speakers altogether may be a better solution, but I like the way these are setup and am really looking for more of a drop-in replacement than anything. I will report back any difference in sound :)

According to the specs, they're the same as Promedia sats (though they're white).

I was actually looking at those a while back, Klipsch support said they didn't match the original specs... I'm sure they would have worked but probably not as well as the stock. Plus, the mounting hardware is different, and I wouldn't be able to use the stands that came with mine.

I got my speakers the other day though, they definitely sound better although not by a huge margin compared to the originals. I'm happy with them though :D
 
I know this is an old thread but I am running into the same problem.. only the driver listed appears to be very hard to get.. they do have another tang band that looks a lot like it tho..

I actually got a pair of the third one you linked for a friend who blew one of his speakers, they seem to work just as well as the ones I ordered for the time I had to test them. The only downside I can think of is that they aren't shielded, which shouldn't be a problem unless you have them right next to a CRT.

Not sure about the second one, but one guy mentions in the reviews that he installed them in his promedias with good results. You shouldn't have to drill out the holes either like he mentions, it was a tight fit when I did mine but I was able to get it all the way down the bolts. Just don't plan on getting it out easily :p
 
They are no where near a monitor.. do you remember if that third one sounded better than the stocks?
 
Im going to say the second pair listed are your best bet because of neo magnets. That being said i don't think it will make any difference. Being that im sure the original does all of the frequency's its crossover'd for just fine.

Every speaker is different and from what I have read from many others who have made the swap is that the midrange is pickedup up which is what this set needs. Just a little would be a nice difference.

EDIT: What I mean by that is that you can play a full freq range to a dozens speakers and each will have its own sound signature based on various parameters. A cheap speakers sound reproduction may not be the same or as good as a more expensive speakers.. and sometimes its the other way around.

Well that's the thing. You are not playing a full range signal. They are more likely than not just playing 125hz to 3khz. Just grab the driver with the higher sensitivity. Another thing you need to look at is the ohm load of the driver.

They did, a bit better on mid-range, very similar to the first. It's been a while since I used them though since I just threw a pair of 5 1/4" speakers up there and they sound loads better than the tiny ones :p
 
Yeah, I have some things I plan on doing.. direct wire to the speaks instead of that dumb headphone style 3.5mm connection.. use some non drying clay , dynomat, and Focals Black Hole filler.. it will add some weight to the enclosure and the Black Hole acts like polyfill only better. I also ordered those drivers. Cheap mods that should help :)
 
shit i just replaced the speaker drivers on my klipsch pro media 2.1 with some tang band 3.0 drivers. I guess i should have done a tutourial on this for ya'll. If you need any help with replacing these speaker drivers lemme know.

I may just have to do that driver swap. I don't listen to my Klipsch as much any more, but for the pocket change it would cost to do it, it would be worth it.
 
the only problem with this swap is you probably have to dremel the holes to expand it a bit for the driver for it to able to mount on the housing of the klipsch a little bit. Its not much more than a 3-4 minute procedure per driver. It literally took me more or less 30 minutes to do the whole procedure.
