ProLiant ML350p with RAID5

I have a HP ML350p running RAID5 with 6 drives. The RAID controller is a Smart Array P420i. The drives are mid-line 1 TB SAS (HP part # 652749-B21).

One of the 6 drives has failed, and HP is sending a replacement via overnight. This server is a host running about 6 different virtual machines, and I have everything backed up (all virtual machines do their own backups, plus I'm going to back-up the entire host tonight). The failed drive has no Green light on, and the amber light is solid, which means it has been placed offline by the controller.

These drives are hot-swappable, so my plan on Monday when the new drive shows up is to just do it without powering anything down. Is this a bad plan, and should I power everything down to do this instead? We have about 200 users during peak on this server, so I'm trying to minimize their impact while also fixing the failed drive.

A couple other questions:

1) Since the controller placed the drive offline, and I now have 5 active drives, am I protected right now against another hard drive failure?
2) Any other backup/replacement strategy I should be considering here?

Maybe a stupid question here, but why wouldn't it just re-build the array to use the 5 drives instead of the original 6?

I have never seen a raid that would do that automatically. Remember to do that it would have to reduce the size of your filesystem and partitions for you and do this while the system was running. What happens if you do not have enough space free? Also I am pretty sure most operating systems will not handle a raid array, hard drive ... hot reducing its size.

Wait a minute. Do you have a hot spare in your raid5?

No I don't... ordering a hot spare for Monday as well.

I just need this server to get through the next 6 hours, and I'm good until Monday... my largest concern is our main SQL server, so I'm just going to push all the transactional logs to our NAS. I got complete back-ups of all the virtual machines as of a couple hours ago ... So if this thing does blow up between now and when UPS shows up on Monday I won't be in too terrible of a jam.
