Project13

The question is how can you concentrate with white walls closing in ;)

I was messing around a bit with LED's and a made a little light puck.

and I stuck it inside the slim line acrylic holder.

You won't be able to see anything but the glow when the MB tray is pushed up but I like it anyways.

My main objective was to get the DVD slot to glow.

Thats all for now

Last night I worked pretty late getting the cube presentable for the LAN. I added the window accent lights and put the mesh in.

I still need to make a lit plex border for the front fans but I didn't have time last night.

So I closed her up..

..and turned her on.

as you can see the two front fans pretty much dissapear. That will be fixed.

large detail shot of above here

To fill you all in what has happend the past few days. I went to the AMOSLAN this weekend and setup my PC. Realized I forgot some cords so I went home. I only live 5 or so miles away so it was no big deal. On the way back as I was sitting at a red light a huge dodge extended cab rear ended me and totaled my Van. Good think my PC wasn't in there because it would have been so much junk. I ended up spending the day in the ER instead of gaming. Zap took my PC home for me though and the rest of the Austin Modders looked after it for me so thank goodness for that. I am ok now. I was sore as heck for about 3 days but they gave me valuim and vicadin for that.

But now I am back in action and decided to get back to work on Project13. So here is what I have done. The lighting up of the front fans. Sure I could have just bought Crappy clear Red LED fans, but where is the fun in that?

So basically I took a 5x5" piece of the 1/4" two way mirror security glass. Milled a hole in it and added 4 leds and a resistor.

88739919_f82b00c1d5.jpg

I wired them all together and hot glued the wiring to the plex to keep it outta the way.

bling bling baby. then I did the same thing to the top one and connected them both together...

and now the front fan grills and holes show up much better. :D

Next is finishing up the bottom....

Looking sexy just like every one of your projects I've ever seen. You've got, how do I say, skillz.

I'm labelled as "dark, evil, satanic, etc.." at school, and I don't usually like lights and such, but that is pretty nice looking, I would prefer more dim lighting though.

heh, well keep in mind the night shot makes it look brighter than it is. It's about half as bright as a CCFL so it has a nice "smouldering" effect.

This is in effect my gaming machine so I don't want anything super bright and distracting. I had to put a switch on the UTMod to keep the planes from landing.

If I lived near you, I would definetly ask to come by to check that out, if it's half as bright as a CCFL then damn... that's awesome.

Not really a Modding update but a fun one. This weekends Austin Modders meeting went off without a hitch...or me being struck by anything large.

some hightlights include having Poman (Master Mini LED Solderer) put these tiny LED's in my Saitek keyboard. These things are sooo tiny. but dang if it don't look cool.

you can't even see them from here. they are about 1/16" long. I am a decent Solderer but these were tiny and my radio shack soldering gun wasn't going to cut it. I needed professinal help. Thanks Poman!

-We set up a nice photo booth and also had some group shots.

Project13 compared to a Mountain Mods Cube.

The ruler is 18" long.

and then a group shot of the PC's that were there.

Large size

Then Mickey21 also showed off his new powder coating gun. We sure had fun with that. While I was there they Powder coated some fans, the back of an Ipod, and some metal to 486Hawks rig. I think after I left they Powder coated everything metal they could get thier hands on in Zaps shop. lol

well, now that I am done playing around I guess i will get back to work on this case. Don't really have much left to go.

OMFG I'm gonna build this case. Minus the lighting and the plexi.

Do you have plans for the case layout that you'd be willing to share?

Thanks guys.

No plans per se. The only plans I have of the project are in my head and in the worklog. Besides if I just gave it to you it would take all the fun out of modding and personalizing your own project.

The Saitek is hot, I am so stoked about it. I am so over blue LED's. Next I am going to to do my MX1000t. Switching the Green Power indicator LED to red and also painting it. Maybe painting the keyboard too.

For now I just need to work on getting time to finish the stupid bottom.

Wow man, thats great. I am also planning on doing a cube(ish) build, and your removable mobo tray is awe-inspiring. There are so many builds in this forum that ones like this can get lost easily, but personally I like yours the best out of the ones I have seen recently. Lannable, cool, quiet, gorgeous, completely custom, and tasteful. Thats exactly what I will be going for with mine, only different design, and green instead of red. (ill probably have to get an nVidia card to fit, I sure hope they have good DX10 cards...

Sorry I get off topic easily, but to reiterate: GREAT JOB, I REALLY LIKE YOUR CASE.

Yea I would like some plans too. All of the cube cases i saw before are m-atx, but i want full atx.

Not to hurt your feelings or anything but did you know about this... They recently came out with a red version. and a game pad with programmable buttons. I have the blue one myself and my computer has all white LED's and have thought about modding my keyboard. Nice job anyways though. About how many SMD's are there?

Yeah I bought mine about a year ago before they made the red ones. so no hard feelings. There are 10 SMD's. I think it would look prettty sweet with white ones too.

haven't had a chance to work on this lately. too busy with work. I tried out a Fatality GPU cooler on my X1800XTPE but it couldn't take the heat. Looked awesome in the case but just couldn't handle it. Too bad, it looked good with the case.

Thanks.

I needed a reminder to finish this case up. I have all the pieces cut to complete the bottom stand I just need to get to it.

Excellent work! Some people have skill and some have talent. You have both! Very nice plexi work (the 'bend' is most awesome). Keep up the great work, and keep posting the pics.

Excelent mod!

I have a Saitek keyboard too, and I have to say that the wrist rest it comes with is the worst one I have ever used. Took it off and got a gel the first day I had it.

Time to finally get to it and get this thing finished. The final piece (don't hold me to that :p ) is the bottom. I want to stay with the same raised off plex look that I have around the outsides of the case.

To do this I used some 1/4" red plex and a hole saw to cut out the "Feet" I cut out 8 disks, polished the edges up, and Sandwich welded them around a plex square.

103998572_442bb3dcd6.jpg

One 1/4" disk glued to the bottom side of the plex and the one to the top side will be attached to the bottom of the case. Probably with epoxy or VHB tape.

I will be adding lighting that will project a red pentagram around the case to give this case a little base accent lighting. That will be my next update...stay tuned.

hmmm lets see where did I leave off.... oh yeah. bottom lighting.

153381501_f113634d05.jpg

I finally made myself get off my butt and do the lighting. It was quick and dirty but it works good and looks good so who cares right?

153381509_aba2503348_o.jpg

basically I did some evil and messy wiring on the bottom. I don't know why but this pic reminds me of some kind of crazy serial killer or horror show art. I told you it was quick and dirty.

153381465_15d9126bd4.jpg

all the lighting is sandwiched in between the plex layer and the alum. So you can't get to it or mess it up. The bottom plate was attached with VHB tape and gives it a bit of a cushion to it. It also will never come off with this stuff.

I added a black pentagram on the bottome to keep it evil.

here is a pic of it at the TXGF LAN this weekend. Surrounded by lots of world class rigs.

I think that pretty much catches us up. I think I am done with this but then again that mouse needs a painting to match as well as I still want to add some artwork to the front in that blank spot. We'll see.
