Here is a brief explanation of the mods I will be doing to my Ultra MicroFly case:

I am going to drill out the rivets that hold the side bracket in place. This bracket acts as a support and the hard drive cage screws into it. Taking off this bracket will allow a better view into the side panel and also allow me to use a larger heatsink. The only downside to this is obviously losing support and I will also need to mount the hard drive in the 3.5” or 5.25” bay. I will be strengthening the case handle by adding metal rods to the back of the handle and also one to act as a hinge. For aesthetics, I will be changing the case color from black to a gloss yellow. I may also paint the inside chassis with flat black. Finally, I will be adding upper supports to the case for extra stability. I would like these supports to be much like the one included, which is just a metal rod with screws on each side. Comments and tips would be appreciated.

This arrived earlier today.

I am going to start the painting with the front bezel. I have already started sanding the pieces.

The weather has not been great here in Florida lately and I just haven’t really had the time to paint the front bezel. I did, however, find time to mod the side and top panels so that the Ultra x2 PSU will fit. Here are some pictures and a link to the mod article.

Well I have made some progress in the past few days. I took the windows out of the side panels and started sanding the panels. I took apart the front bezel, primed, and applied two color coats to each piece. The main piece needs to cure for a few days before I add another coat. Once that is finished I will prime and paint the panels and finally, clear coat everything. I was going to paint the inside black but since the Ultra x2 is not black I think ill pass. The only new thing I might do to the case is add modders mesh to the sides to improve airflow since I will be overclocking. I will also need to find a way to improve the strength of the handle.

Yeah, I am in the Orlando area and the only problem I have been having is the rain.

Couldn't you just have gotten a Yellow case and a yellow mouse?

That would have been boring. And I want the WHOLE case to be yellow. The qpacks just have the front bezel colored.

this is the microfly which doesnt come in yellow, btw i think this one is better than the qpack and longer :D

Well this way I can get the case I want for a good price. For those of you who do not know, I got this case for $39.99 at Tiger Direct before the changed the price. I have probably only spent $20 so far so that is way under any other case.

Finished the sanding of the panels tonight. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I will be painting them. I will probably just use the sandable primer because I dont understand why I would need the self-ectching since I have not striped it down to the aluminum. Below is a picture of the mesh I am thinking of using instead of the windows. This will allow airflow and a view inside the case. Please let me know what you think of this idea. I was also thinking of using a VGA or Fan vent shown below.

Here is a test fit of the front bezel and the drive bay covers. I like they actually like the silver/yellow. I was going to paint all the silver pieces but it will be to much of a pain with the buttons.

reminds me of Pokemon Pikachu!
heh, anyway cool, this thing will be sick if its blinged out with meshed and that vga vent, etc.

There will not be any updates for my project until mid next week. I have to work and I am going to two lans this weekend.

The reason I decided on the yellow with the blue lighting is because those were my high school colors. I have always likes them.

nice work

mnpctech might not like you linking their pics though...

Yet another update! Most of the work was done today. I got a clear coat on the two drive bays and the side panels are primed and have one coat of color. They need another coat of color but I ran out of light. I will have to wait for the paint to cure then sand and put on another coat. I will test fit the panels tomorrow or later tonight to see how it will look completed. Once all the final color coats cure, I will add a few coats of clear and then sand with 1500 and 2000. The final step will be to use some rubbing compound to fill the scratches. If I have the time, it will probably be finished sometime next week. So far this is the total spent on the project.

Name:
Duplicolor Sandable White Primer 3X = $12
Duplicolor Acrylic Chrome Yellow 2X = $8
3M Imperial 600 Grit Sandpaper 1X= $3.50
3M Imperial 800 Grit Sandpaper 1X= $3.50
3M Imperial 1500 Grit Sandpaper 1X= $3.50
3M Imperial 2000 Grit Sandpaper 1X= $3.50

For a grand total of $34. Add that to the price of the case and you get approx. $74. Not to bad when you can barely get a MicroFly for that price now.

I couldn’t resist assembling the case. I was worried about scratching the finish but I did not. You cannot tell this by the pictures but the two drive covers look a lot better than the rest because the clear coat gives it a real nice shine and enhances the color.

I was thinking of painting the chassis black but I would have to paint the x2 power supply to match and I did not want to do that. I may still change my mind though.

My painting is finished. the final result is not professional quality but it looks good to me. You can only see the flaws if you really look up close. Let me know what you think. I should be getting the parts for the computer next week.

i'd like to see the grey bezel areas painted black (or any other color than grey)

The SFF is complete! Took me about 3 hours of painting and assembly today but I finally finished everything. Now all I have to do is wait another week or so for the money to get a graphics card and another stick of ram.

How did you get the handle off? I just got my microfly a while ago, and I'm wondering how to pull that thing off without breaking it.
