I haven't really come up with a proper name just yet... I usually like to do that after I see the end result.
My plans are to take some of the older parts I have laying around and make an HTPC for my wife and I. I am not 100% sure of what I want the end result to look like at this time, but I would be pleased if it fit into the oriental theme of our living room... we'll see. So far I am gathering up some of the stuff I will need, and I have the frame planned out so all I need to do is cut the pieces and assemble them... then lots of sanding.
I got the motherboard tray from my sister's old Sony Vaio case... I like it's layout and I thought it would be a good start to build around.
Here's some current pics...

They all came to check on my progress... the white one (Freddy) was shaking his head "no" because I asked him if he wanted to help. Seriously. The other two are useless, but Freddy will bring me my tools if I point and tell him "go get it." I'll not ask him to bring my drill bit case ever again though... that was a disaster :p

Motherboard fits perfectly :D

Here's some of the little hardware for the assembly

Here's the frame assembled. I've done some preliminary sanding and everything is coming along nicely.

I am going to cut a panel to go over the back... then I'll just remove material from the important areas where wires and air need to get through.

It could also be stood up like a regular tower if I wanted, but I think my main focus will be on the horizontal position like a typical HTPC case.

Next I will cut the panels and get the internal area sorted out with a place to mount a hard drive, etc. As of right now I'm not planning on adding a DVD drive... I'll probably just use an external one.
More updates as I progress.

As a side note, I'm also working on embedding a couple of my 1gb flash drives in wood... we'll see how that turns out.

Thats pretty beast. DO you have any plans on paint, or stain or anything?

Keep it up man!!

Thank you. The frame is made from Poplar, but I'm not 100% sure what the large piece behind the motherboard tray is... but I do like the grain.

Oh crap, I meant poplar! dammit.

The back piece is most likely some type of birch.

I would really like to keep it natural looking... I don't know maybe a cherry wood color... but I haven't decide on that at this point.

Thank you :)

It does look birchy :p and that poplar is some really hard stuff.

could've atleast used some good wood, and for the love of all that is unholy why use screws to put it together? there are so many ways to put it together WITHOUT using ugly screws...

Why use "good wood"? It's just the frame. Why not use "ugly screws"? It's just the frame.

Dude stop harrasing the guy. If you have something worthwhile to say then say it but it is HIS build not yours. You don't need to be an ass to the guy, you could have suggested it much more properly.

pointing out flaws isnt exactly "harrasing", just the truth and if u cant handle the truth i suggest u stfu

if u cant build something properly then dont do it at all

What the heck is going on here? Jeez, I wouldn't even want to continue the build with you yapping. Give the guy some slack.

Not even mentioning, Mr. Anderson, that you just revived a thread from a month and a half ago just to keep insulting people.

One warning.

Such a keyboard badass.. Dude STFU and get out of the thread if you don't like it. Now run along kiddo.

I like the layout of the tray you are using. Was that from a clamshell design case or something? Any way to link the donor for us?

Looks like a very nice and elegant way to put a case together :) Did you ever make something like this before?

Damn I didn't even realize there was a miniature war going on in here... lol.

Thanks to those who don't hate it...

KrylonArt... the donor was an old Sony VAIO desktop case similar to this...

sorry for the tiny pic, it's all I could find at the moment.

Elledan... I've only modded existing cases, I've never built one from scratch before. I guess I would call this a learning process for me.

I really need to get this thing going again, the winter kind of slowed me down with some of the things I wanted to do with it... and my sister was going to do some artwork on the side panels... have to get that done too. Everything's been crazy for me for the last few months so I haven't given enough attention to this project, but I hope to get back on track here soon.
