Project Spark Released For The PC

As for the second point, there is again little tangible real world difference between Win 8 and win 7 as far as gaming performance goes. The mention of tablets and touch aren't really a valid argument when trying to call it superior for gaming as that has nothing to do with the gaming experience.

Considering the huge library of tablet and touch based games, of course tablets and touch have a lot to do with some gaming experiences.

A huge library of "cow clickers" for phones and tablets doesn't suddenly a superior gaming OS make. Either way you are dancing around the obvious thing we were talking about.

Superior in the OSes ability to scale across form factors and input types. One very cool example is the lasted Gameloft shooter, Modern Combat 5. A pretty cheesy CoD clone for tablets and phones. But on Windows 8 the game supports mice, keyboards, game controllers and touch. It even supports multiple monitor wide screen better than a lot of desktop only games.

That argument falls right on its face once you point out you can install a small program that she's just that.

In other words, it's broken out of the box.

Just imagine if someone had to take in their car to have the steering wheel re-installed because they didn't like the hands-free motion interface. Imagine the tech rolling his eyes at the luddite who can't get over a minor change.

God this thread just didn't get derailed by the very first post. Imagine if this thread was about the topic?

Just imagine the possibilities...

It does get pretty insane. I did get into it as well but I've actually have played Spark some, pretty interesting idea. But I imagine that even when 10 gets here and even if it's well received no doubt some people will still keep on about 8.

I think spark is awesome, in about to buy it and spend some time with my kids on it.

Jump through hoops? ninite.com...classic start...30 seconds. Unless you are using AOL of course. I quit that jazz when I gave up MUD's though, hopefully that isn't the case. Seriously wouldn't doubt it...

So in other words, even if 8.1 is a superior gaming platform... which it is... we can't discuss ANY gaming on it because the bitch fest of Win 8 hate will always drown out any useful dialog?

You know, MS isn't entirely stupid. Simply USING their OS doesn't "send a message" that we love the new start screen. MS is absolutely aware that we are somewhat bound to upgrade for technology reasons. They are capable of hearing the universal outcry of dislike for one particular interface feature and changing it next time, no matter how many people are using the OS.

Perspective, folks. Perspective.

The sooner we can get DX12 working on PCs, and stop bitching about the platform, the better or we might end up sinking this great little PC gaming renaissance we have going on.

And yes, I'm all for Windows 10 to get here ASAP. Whatever it takes to make people satisfied with a version of Windows that has the hardware capabilities we need.

My friends thought they disliked Windows 8.1, until I did a full restart of my system in 30 seconds and was back in game in time to help them win a round. That takes a combo of Win 8.1, SSD drive and modern motherboard features.

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah... are you serious right now?

Do I need to take a phone video of my Q6600 Win7 machine going from off to gaming in ~30 seconds?

You act like Win 8.1 has some NEW programming to combo that bullshit, when it has 99% to do with the SSD and seek times hahaha!

BUT, please feel free to prove me wrong.
Tell me what these "new special features" are.
Tell me why my XP machine can't perform this task as well? (raid SCSI omg no SSD but still boots in ~30 seconds hahaha)

ugh fanboys and their NAZI like disregard for reality

It isn't a superior gaming platform...At best it is marginally better.
And at worst there will be compatability problems with some games.

BUT... under the hood it's still superior in enough ways to make it a better gaming platform.
HOW? Give me specifics. What features does Windows 8 bring over 7 that really make it better for gaming? Seriously, look at this page:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-8-gaming-performance,3331-13.html

Some quotes:

"Of the 10 games we benchmarked, only one demonstrated a significant difference in moving from Windows 7 to Windows 8, and only on Nvidia's GeForce GTX 660. That game was Borderlands 2, where our average measured frame rate dropped from 86.6 to 81 FPS."

"More bothersome was the compatibility issue we ran into in Sleeping Dogs, which affected Windows 8, but not Windows 7. When we chose the High detail preset, most of the in-game models simply disappeared."

"Aside from those couple of idiosyncrasies, performance under Windows 8 is indistinguishable from Windows 7. "

Now granted, modern games are likely to be more compatible, but what about some lesser heard of game from 2010? I care about more than just mainstream AAA games.

So you dug up a benchmark from right before Windows8 was released and ignored all the newer ones? No you're not biased, not at all. If you can't be bothered to figure the answer out to that question yourself by now you clearly don't really want to know.

Just....wow. Didn't realize so much W8 hate was still around.......

Granted, being forced to install a Start menu replacement is annoying (and takes a whole 30 seconds of your time....), but getting the Multi-Monitor improvements, File Copy Improvements, File History, Hyper-V, Storage Spaces, etc etc etc is worth it. Especially so on my Work PC.

Yeah, you can get a lot of those features in some form on Windows 7.....if you install a 3rd party app to add the features in :)

Anyway - how's the GAME?

This was all I found, by all means, link me to a comparison showing compatibility or speed improvements over 7 on a battery of games, not just one or two. Again, let's see some actual REASONS 8 is better than 7 for gaming. If I'm biased, it's because I literally have not seen information backing up the claims of the earlier poster. Information supporting arguments is everything.
