Firstly, Let me introduce myself. Ive been a LONG time reader, just never had anything going on here, thats good enough to post.

I must say, everyone here has inspired me to work on this mod.

I'm going to try and keep it detailed enough, but also try not to bore you , so im throwing in a lot of pics :)

56K WARNING!!

Intro: Ok, the name for this project, came from the idea, that the inside of the case will be black, (Colour of sky at night) and lighting inside will be blue (colour of sky on a nice clear day)

Lets get stuck in!

\\------------Day1-------------//

My server case(Thermaltake Soprano) was Ugly as..So, it was in need of change.

First Things First, the side window / Panel was horrid...Just horrid.

Here's what it looked like!

img0001zkb.jpg

The fugly side window was held on by these things...so it was monotonous trying to get them all out...

img0002z.jpg

After applying some Masking Tape, Measuring up etc, here's what i got...

img0006ugb.jpg

Here's the old Plexi Standardized Window.....

img0004e.jpg

Out comes the old dremel, on goes the cutting disc.. :) BTW , yeah, im doing this in my room - Its what being lazy does to you!

img0017fuv.jpg

Here's the final finished result after cutting all the neccesarry bits off, to make a frame.

img0011pto.jpg

img0016jrv.jpg

And obviously i Filed the edges down, and i also used a medium grit sandpaper just to make sure the edges were ok.

img0012x.jpg

I used a medium grit sand paper to take the coat of paint / laquer that was on there from stock. and here's the result

img0034g.jpg

I also noticed whilst using the Sporano, was that the HDD bays were getting in the way. So seems i only have 2 HDD's ...Out they come.. :p

img0023rde.jpg

Brief markings of where im gonna cut holes for the PSU wires to be routed to. The edges will be Finished of with some U-Channel Gromets

img0022dxw.jpg

The case is stripped of everything, Now onto the paint process...My favourite :p

Heres the paint used, A Self Etching Primer for bare metal surfaces(Two light coats, enough so you cant see the metal / barely see it)
And a Matt black finish, car paint. 4-5 Coats, Leave to dry for 2 Days. Also, personal preference, but you can aslo Laquer it. I prefer not to..

img0035lbi.jpg

The case is gonna be painted last as i need to mark out the precise location of the PSU wires - sata cables etc etc.

Well...the server has been down for several days due to me modding the chassis/case etc..I needed it back up..it has all my files on it :D

img0036oua.jpg

2nd coat of primer added, just waiting for it to dry !

img0038y.jpg

2nd Coat
img0047eij.jpg

img0050dlw.jpg

After 4th Coat - I added one more coat of paint just to be prepared for knocks/scratches

img0048cga.jpg

First Layer of primer applied!

img0052c.jpg

First Coat of Matt Black added, notice the spots, those are from the paint coming out rubbishly... So, solution: Place the can of paint in hot water for 10 mins at least to thin the paint out before applying..

img0054x.jpg

I found an old CD-R, so, i hacked it to bits, and primed/Sprayed it! I need to get a FacePlate for it too!

Being Primed

The backplate fully coated :)

img00212.jpg

Finally got around to drilling the Fan hole, i used an 85mm Hole Cutter and a Dewalt Cordless drill

img0026mdt.jpg

The case, preped for Spray
img0062jwt.jpg

More to come :)

Looks like a good project. Steel cases to me are more forgiving then aluminum, but make a huge mess when you cut on them. Anything will look better then the orignal. Good luck.

In the last post, i was in the middle of spraying everything. It all went well - Turned out better than i thought!

Cutting the hole to hide my PSU wires. Will be cleaned up with a U-Channel Gromet eventually lol.

img0002had.jpg

Primer goes onto the case, i think this was the first layer (i always work in thin layers, this way it eliminates the problems of dripping etc) !toot

img0007ikw.jpg

My reward for working so hard:p

Case being sprayed matt black

img0016i.jpg

img0017wqb.jpg

These are the original ones i took out of the side window. Waste not want not ;)
Marked the holes and drilled them, and they went in easy enough

img0022rov.jpg

img0023mdx.jpg

Peeling the Protective cover off to attatch the fan and fan grill.
img0034r.jpg

Coming together slowly :)

img0035k.jpg

Attatching the orange Thermaltake fans inside (120mm Fans)

img0041mvs.jpg

in goes the motherboard for test-fitting

img0042n.jpg

Just to see what it looks like

img0045q.jpg

All fits snug :)

The USB ports on the top were removed, because, well...i hated them...

;)

Black case + purple mainboard PC = yummy :D

Looks good so far :)

looks pretty nice
black and orange, with a purple mobo nice!! :)

Thanks For the kind words..

The hard-drives will be mounted to the base plate of the Case chassis..

Thanks, the painting just takes time, You cant rush it thats for sure!

Ill try to keep you updated as i go along!

Finally, my parcels were delivered today :

PC Sleeving Kit
Dual Cathode Kit - Neon Blue :D

img0001dsd.jpg

And my sleeving kit :

img0002y.jpg

This sleeving kit is the most frustrating monotonous job ever... lol took all the last patients i had left...

anyway, heres how it looks.

img0004z.jpg

Ready to be heated up..

img0003tvf.jpg

img0007h.jpg

img0008t.jpg

Here i just used the same method as many, attatching and hiding the wired on the back of the Mobo tray! Works nicely :)

img0006y.jpg

Ok so, the next thing i had to do was find a place for my HDD's seems i've removed the Bay.
img0013l.jpg

This was one option....Not too fussed on it

You'll see where i end up putting them on the finished result :p

Just a quick test fit

img0019i.jpg

The front door is missing because i was buffing it up :p

Hope you like it ><

It looks very good! I've always wanted to do something to a side panel like that.

I like this a lot. It is simple, and not overly flashy. I think it looks awesome.

Good job man.

This is a very good mod, I'm really digging the overall look. You did a fantastic job on the window panel - something I STILL can't do.

I do have to comment though - such a huge window, requires incredibly immaculate wiring... I think you should suspend the HD's right under the 5.25" bay area, to get rid of the front panel (power switch) cables.

With the drives reversed (connectors facing the front of the case) your entire interior would be about 3x cleaner - that would really push this into "great fucking job" category :)
