So I've had this radio since 2000 when I got my first apartment during college. It's been in my family since it was purchased in 1939 from Sears, Roebuck. The radio, although could turn on, had a frayed power cord and would not play anything. It would just light up the front face. So I've had it more so as decoration for the past 11 years. It's been in a non working condition for longer. So my fiance and I talked about it, and she stated "Would there be any way to put something in that to make it of use?" That's when I chimed in and said that I've always wanted to build the media center inside of it or some form of jukebox. "Well, then why not do that?" is her reply after I filled her in on my past ideas with it. So here it is.

Yes, I'm contemplating actually polishing the case up overall, restaining it to make it look better as well. But we'll see.

Converting a wooden radio is an awesome idea. In fact, I have one in the attic that is begging for a similar treatment. I'll be watching closely. Good luck.

Wow. They sure don't make them like they used to LOL.

Look at that wiring! Damn! Looks pre-transistor era :p

Looks like all of the vacuum tubes are in perfect shape. Everything in general looked to be fairly pristine.

Ordered one of these bad boys yesterday: Lian Li Replacement Motherboard Tray - $29.95

Nice. I would have just chopped up and old case, but that looks nicely made. Got any sketches of your potential layout or design?

Yeah, I'm working on it right now. I've got a few concepts for the overall design. IF I can I'll be placing the DVD drive to open where the original row of buttons are. Mounting the buttons to the drive tray so that way when it closes, it looks nice and original. I'm going to be playing around with that this evening.

I would have chopped up an old case if I had one that would work.

Cool. The bezel that says "Silvertone" is that plastic? This should be a pretty forgiving build. Lots of room!

This was a dread thread and now it's not!?!? Can't wait to see the sketches!

Well, I started it in the other section and figured it was better suited for this forum, so I just closed the other one and opened it here. (sketches coming soon)

Very nice, am looking forward to what you do here! :) I did something much smaller scale last year for PAX East.... It's a 1951 Philips radio that is now my 8 year old's desktop PC:

I got to re-use the vacuum tubes by gluing them inside the top and putting a red LED strip behind them.

Very cool setup for an 8 year old. Looks pretty cool. The project is taking a little time since I'm working on a few projects around the house, yardword, and I'm building a patio area off of the screened in porch I JUST finished. But I am working on it and documenting.

Been busy but will have some pictures up soon. I'm working on sanding down the entire radio to restain it to make it look good again. I've been doing it by hand, so I'm finally going to break down and buy a sander.

However this project is also going on at the same time that I'm building a patio in the back out of broken cement driveway pieces. (the company that built the neighborhood messed up driveways and whatnot so they have a large pile of broken concrete in the back of the neighborhood. So I'm gathering that to get enough pieces to make the patio and whatnot.

Fun projects all around.

! I am so excited to see where this goes. Thanks for what you've posted so far, and I hope to see more soon.

Pics coming soon. This project was put on the back burner because of 2 other projects (one of which to finally free up room in the garage again so I can work on this more easily.
