Alright well i am going to be starting up project powder is better. It will give you a glimpse into what powder can do for you and itll also look really nice. The victim for project powder is better is going to be a lian-li PC 7b which is a black anodized aluminum case. the plan for the case is to powdercoat with 2 colors and then top that off with an illusions coat. Illusions is like a mirage coat and I have 5 color options there (I will choose one that matches the color theme we choose). I also have about 70 different options for the basecoat under the illusions. Before I start posting pics i would like some input from you guys on some color themes. I was thinking of doing the side panels and the bays one color and then the front and the top another color. I would like to have one of the colors be high gloss black as is the best color to use for illusions. I have posted a poll and will use the color scheme the majority votes on. I will start the process only after we have a color scheme chosen. I would also be fine with doing three color themes as well and also doing the insides a different color. Just post your thoughts

Thanks,
Rob

I chose other, and I say Blue & Yellow.
Here is a pic of the colors I mean...

Although I really dont know what its going to look like, so I dont really know if this would fit in at all. Also I think you should do the mouse and keyboard (if possible) and maybe the monitor to finish the mod off. Good luck.

NOTE: That pic is of a fish (upclose) I found it, any you can get some more ideas, at This Website.

I chose Black and Yellow because yellow is such an overlooked color and you should be able to incorporate it well into your case. Finding matching parts like cables, sleeving, etc should be easy too.

Well I could liquid coat my moniter and keyboard but personally i like the silver and black theme I have going with that. With powdercoating the peice has to be able to withstand 385 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes. So anything nonmetal has to be liquid coated. A really nice advantage of powdercoating is that there are tons of textured powders that look just great and would be really costly with liquid. If anyone wants to see some id be more than happy to take a couple of pictures of what im talking about. The panels will be blasted with glass bead to get the anodizing off and then will be coated just in case any of you want to know. I was thinking of going with a textured surface for the inside of the case. We have a textured blue and 3 textured blacks.

I will also close the poll on monday so I can start the project next week.

I guess yellow is winning. I have a plasma cutter at my disposal as well but i have no idea what i want to cut into any of the panels.

Man, I need to act faster. I just subscribed, and I see I am not the only one with the idea to use powder coat. I think you should use a different scheme, if only because everyone has seen the color combos listed. Maybe a texturized white over a base, like a black and silver mix.
Also, everyone I have talked to had to grind the anodizing off the Lian-Li's and any other decent aluminum cases. It does not bead blast like paint, as it is a chemical reaction that hardens the surface.

Whatever Color scheme I do nobody else will be able to do because I will coat the insides one color and then the outside 2 colors plus the illusions coat. If I did this for a customer it would cost around 200 dollars or more if there is extra prepwork. So I think itll be pretty unique unless someone wants to get the exact same thing for that price.

:D
I just made it a triple tie!
(blue, silver and yellow), may be you could do it black, silver and blue.

Black and Red is like the honda civic of case colors. Everyone does it, but only 1 out of 10000000 do it right.

"Black and Blue" and "Black and Yellow" can look really good if done right... but look REALLY REALLY bad if done wrong.

If you wanted to do black and silver, it'd probably be cheaper and look better to just swap out some of the Lian-Li parts with some black replacement parts.

I personally like the look of Blue and white with some silver here and there.

Not many paint their computers white. Maybe a base coat white with (looks around for inspiration, ahh a can of AXE) light blue and red as secondary colors?

Perhaps black external yellow internal/external with white sleeving?

the more i think about it the more im against black and silver and more for either the yellow or the blue with black.

Well black and blue it is. I will coat the inside with yellow though as I think it will set it off nicely, pics will be on the way shortly.

just took everything apart to get ready to coat and will have pics up tomorrow.

And now the pics ladies and gents
Here are the shots of all the surfaces prepped and ready to be coated

Next the side panels and the bays will be coated johnston blue which is a nice blue in my opinion. I slightly warped the top panel of my case while testing the blastability of the anondizing and then I realized that I could just coat the parts hot and the only prepp id have to do is lightly sand the anodizing. Anyone want to trade me my slightly bent side panel for a good one? lol The next round of pics will show you more of the process of powdercoating, youll get to see the machine, the oven, and me in action. :D

Agreed on black and red. It has to be done right.

Any comments? Ideas? Youll have to excuse the mess in the shop, we have been swamped with work and havent been able to clean up in like 2 weeks. :D

Black and yellow for sure!

My two main cases in the past have had that color scheme, with an industrial kind of look, can only find pics of the second one, not the first one (most pics died in HDD crash)

Older case was a small midtower Enlight, same kind of scheme, but with blaxk stripes across the top panel, and only one 80mm blowhole on the top, one 120mm on the side panel... Still using that case as a general-purpose server ;)
