Every since I was a wee lad, I coveted the hell out of the two-tone aesthetic of the iMac G3. It's friggin' beautiful, innit? And fortunately for a first timer such as myself, there's plenty of research material out there already. So once I obtain one, I'd like to convert it.

My goal is something costing closer to $500, though I anticipate it costing up to $800, and that can match or outperform my old tower.

For the case, in all likelihood, I'm going with the later model solely for the fact that the original tray loading ones don't come in ruby. Though there's still a chance that my dislike of slot loading disc drives may win out over color preference.

As for the internals, I have a list of tentative parts so far:

Leaning less towards tentative and more towards definite, the A10-6800K APU

Based on potentially dubious advice on an obscure post from an even more obscure forum that, for the life of me, I can't seem to find in my browser history so I may have hallucinated it this late into the evening, a Mini ITX mobo by MSI

I'm figuring that'd give me plenty of wiggle room for what I anticipate will be shoddy wiring.

Some reasonably priced DDR3

An SSD that received positive remarks on a few different forums

This PSU. Nothing special here.

(After the $80 G3 itself, that puts me at a fairly decent $530 before tax and shipping)

I'm not entirely confident in the results of my research so far, so I could really use some input on the parts I've selected before I go put money down. This especially goes for the mITX mobo since this guy seemed to have no trouble with a full sized board in his build. So needlessly choosing a component that important based solely on its size might not end well for me. I did make sure that it'll support the Richland APU, at least (apparently they have been shipping out with the necessary BIOS update for just over a month now), but it doesn't mean that I couldn't do better.

Once I finalize and order my parts, I look forward to following this up with a proper worklog so that the world can gawk at what will likely be a monumental failure.

Should be interesting. Not sure what the displays on those are like, but I'm sure we've come a long way since then. It would be cool to see the panel get replaced as well.

"Friggn' beautiful?" That's in the eye of the beholder, I'm afraid. But, none the less, this will be a cool project to follow if you get it off the ground.

The display is a CRT. It's coming out with the rest of the hardware. We don't take too kindly to CRT's where I'm from because they're generally unpleasant to be around when powered on. I'll eventually obtain a 15" LCD to gut like the other guys did.
I had someone with more hardware experience look over the parts, and the list is fine. Everything's ordered now including this http://www.amazon.com/Silverstone-12-7mm-Interface-Blu-Ray-SOB02/dp/B00BY3LCLI and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099. I'm hoping that since I'm laying the board flat, there should be more than ample room vertically for that monster heat sink. I'm also planning to find reasonably discreet places on the top and bottom to drill holes for pulling up cool air and pushing the hot out the top. The handle on the back looks promising but I won't know 'til I see it in person. The bottom should be easy either way. Then I need to obtain additional fans for those places. This is all just theoretical for now though. I suppose it'll have to wait for the project to start the weekend after next.

Cool, cool.

Well, be sure to keep us up to date. Spare no details. These kinds of builds are awesome and it will be cool to see one executing with modern hardware.

I, for one, will be tuned in :)
