THAT IS IT!!! I have finally decided that my boring old case has gotten...well...boring. So I will be changing it :D .
Here is the case im working with so far:

Here is my idea for the case:

(Yes, for those of you that know it is UnrealEd but I dont have any other 3d editing program and its just to give you an idea.
The case is going to be painted a forest camo color, and inside the side display window will be an airsoft usp with some .45 caliber dummy rounds. FOr those of you who have not read any of my previous posts, I am the type of person who feels if I am using any part of an idea, I am stealing someone's idea. SO Im awaiting permission from kodiakstar for the side display window.
And just for fun:

Are you also going to be contacting people who have put temperature readouts on their case? What about painting, plenty of people have painted their cases, you better get permission for that.

Put a display in the case isn't anything new, there's plenty of POS (point of sale) computers out there that do just that.

To avoid thread crap labeling: good luck on the build.

I just thought his idea was quite original.

I mean yea you do see a lot of people with paint and temp. readout displays but its a common thing but im certainly not going around asking every single one for permission, just didnt want to use his idea and take the credit thats all.

his idea was that he had made a window and actually pust something inside the window, backed it, and lit the window to displauy an object, not the inside of his case.

UPDATE
gotta love updates :)
so far ive gotten the sides and top of the case sanded down to bare metal and I will need to take a trip up to lowe's for all the paint. I shoulde do that soon.

Im a sloppy person when it comes to working environments

You should get a Palm Orbital sander ;) works a bit faster and saves on elbow grease

well we probably have one, but its at a racing garage about 20 mins. from where I live. We sent all our tools their when my dad started racing his mustang

Im sorry I dont have any pics of the working process because I went to our racing garage as metioned above^ to make good use of the paint room and sand blaster.
to start...
I have a picture of the cut window and the fan I put in for my video card. I cut the window out useing a mill and a chisel type bit. And I have a mad dog "whisper-quiet" fan to accomodate the new 80mm whole. The window for the gun had to be moved to the front becasue the handle used to pull the side off got in the way and would have been a major pain in the ass to work around.

Up close of the fan and grill:

I have an airsoft USP that broke a while ago and decided to make good use of it, here it is sitting in it's newly made display window in all its plastic glory:

And a final shot of the side panel with the gun in:
Mod_Pic_5.JPG

The other side:

Painting the front bezel of the case and all my drives:

Mod_Pic_8.JPG

and a couple of finished shots:
Mod_Pic_9.JPG

Mod_Pic_10.JPG

Mod_Pic11.JPG

Mod_Pic_12.JPG

As you can see the front bezel was done using more of a "free-hand" pattern versus the sides being kodiaks "painting-by-numbers" :p Tell me which you guys think looks better.

The case is by no means done. I plan on lighting the display window from the back using white CCFLs and I still have yet to put the "bomb" on the side which I will do when I get around to odering my temp display from PCMods. And until i get all that set up the two safety switches remain to be my power and reset buttons.

Until then I'll let you enjoy those pics

:p

no offence but i really cant say i like the camo. I think you need a darker brown to help make the green and black blend, and maybe more variations in the pattern as it just looks like the same thing over.

you really gotta make the colors blend.

everything else looks pretty dang sharp though. I like the switches and the gun display idea  maybe you could put in some kind of lighting in the gun box to allow it to be seen in the dark. a green or white light.

hope i helped, and keep up the good work!

yea, we went to lowe's to get the paint and those were the only colors they had, interestingly enough, called camoflage color.
They didnt have a dark brown which in fact was one of my original colors.
Dark Brown
Dark Green
Black
Slightly Lighter Green
But yea, so your saying you like the look on the front bezel better?
Ive had plenty of people tell me that so I might change it, I dont know.
But anyways, I plan on using this display for the "bomb" setup:
http://store1.yimg.com/I/sidewindercomputers_1830_8424318
And I'm probably going to use white CCFLs or I might do Blue for the gun display backlighting.
Let me know if you think white or blue would look better. Blue I can get up the street at CUSA but the white ones I would have to order from PCMods.

I like the camo on the front much better than the camo on the sides. The sides seem more like, well, a diseased cow rather than a camo job. No offense or anything, just saying I prefer the look of the front.

...and maybe more variations in the pattern as it just looks like the same thing over ... you really gotta make the colors blend.
^ My thoughts exactly.

edit - one other thing that I would suggest is that you try to hide the hot glue thats holding on the gun and clip. It would look better is you couldn't see the hot glue. Other than that, I love how it looks so far. Keep workin hard, its going to look great!

the front camo needs a little more done to it, and the sides transition colors too fast. i'd try sanding down the sides (lightly, so there's still paint there) then freehanding random stuff on lightly on top.

nice idea, and i guess i'll be the fourth to recommend the "in case of emergency break glass"... attach a little hammer to the case too:D

nice idea, could use a little neatening up on the execution though (IMO).

thnx for all the input, but i wont be able to do anything until this weekend as school is getting a little on the annoying/overwhelming side.

but I see what you all are saying it does look kinda wierd on the side, so ill see if i can fix that.

I really like it...I love the toggle switches!
You took a pretty bland case and made it really cool, good job! :D

it was an opinion not a suggestion,
you could do better with the camo design, check the chemical warfare thread,
also you could put some dirt/rust effect
Please clear the silicon residue from the gun

it looks very nice and interesting to me... but i hope you never have to take it on a plane  what a mess that would be...

it would be quite a mess, but the rule (at least in my airport) is "it must be unloaded and declared" *whisper* I could get them on that one ;)

I cant post pics right now as my mom has my camera and she is at work

But you can probably get the basic idea. I found it quite convenient that I had a couple of rifle rounds in my bedroom, and hey, look at my mod. So I'm thinking, I could use these. Interestingly enough they are the perfect diameter for the two control knobs on my Live! Drive :p

As I said I'll post pics later so check back in a couple of hours and tell me what you think.

im not sure 100% the look your going for, but for a war case, first i would distress those switch covers... also the camo is wayyy too clean... if you want to go for a real "just out of war" effect you need more like discoloration.fading and color bleeding...

great work so far :)

I have to agree with the earlier comments that your front panel cammo is better. My suggestion... sand the case again to soften all the painted cammo edges, paint it base color again (sorry :( ) and then spray your cammo on the assembled case with any drives or windows masked off. That way you'll get color areas going over the corners and edges. It's a lot of work, but I think you'll be more pleased with the final result.

The gun-in-window idea is cool, can't say I've ever seen that done before. Cool mod.

actually im the one that had your post deleted which originally said
"IMHO it looks bad, bad, bad. I'm not into soldier stuff anyways."
and i would appreciate it if you kept negative comments to yourself.

I appreciate your concern about not getting far of topic so my next post will be of the improved paint :)

sorry about that starhawk, hmm
I was thinking sort of a spot like ligh instead of cold cathode but it woudl generate lots of heat so give this a try, in that gun container, attach a led and cover it with a u like shaped cover, like sort of wall lamp, that could give you military like lightning, couple it with a piece of coloured see through material(yellowish for more of a natural look. And I second my dirty the case up adive, you could do chips on that military switches.

if i knwo what you mean by chips (as in like something hard and sharp hit it?) the problem with that is that the switch covers are made of plastic and that wouldnt show up all to well, now if there were someway I could accent them that might work, but good idea on the lighting, ill have to try that

Take a pic of the cabeling inside. I really think you need to clean it up, as the last pic you took that showed the inside (though it was before completion) gave the hint of a messy interior. Congrats, you really turned that ugly POS into something nice (as bad as it looked when he started, it looked even worse in person).

PS-get your ass over here and help me out with my cumUSA case.
